AFC Fylde stun Bromley

January 27, 2024

Struggling AFC Fylde stunned second-placed Bromley 1-0 to record a major Vanarama National League upset.

Danny Ormerod raced on to Danny Whitehead’s 11th-minute through ball to score his third goal in four games.

Corey Whitely had the ball in the net for Bromley in the first half but he was ruled offside.

Ormerod was close to a second for Fylde, who remain 22nd and in the relegation zone, as his late effort rebounded off a post.

David Noble’s time as Wealdstone manager started with a win as they beat FC Halifax 2-0.

Noble left St Albans this week to take over at Stones, replacing Stuart Maynard who recently made the step-up into the full-time ranks with Notts County.

And Noble was able to enjoy a successful start thanks to goals from Aaron Henry and Tahvon Campbell.

Henry’s first goal of his second spell with the club came 12 minutes in, breaking through a would-be challenge on the edge of the box and flashing a drive across goal and in.

Campbell added a clincher in the third minute of time added on.

Aldershot overcame Rochdale 3-1 to return to the Vanarama National League play-off places.

Stuart O’Keefe and Jack Barham combined smartly for Lorent Tolaj to give the Shots a fifth-minute lead.

Ian Henderson swiftly equalised with his 11th goal of the season, but Aldershot were back in front two minutes before the break when O’Keefe was brought down and Cian Harries dispatched the penalty.

Barham ended a neat team move after 51 minutes to complete the victory and move the Shots up to seventh in the table.

Dorking got back to winning ways in the Vanarama National League after an agonising defeat at Dagenham last time out by brushing aside 10-man Boreham Wood 3-0.

Downed by Inih Effiong’s last-gasp strike in midweek, Dorking took a 32nd-minute lead here as George Francomb’s corner was met by Jason Prior, who rose highest to head beyond Nathan Ashmore.

Alfie Rutherford made it 2-0 five minutes later when he tapped into an empty net after capitalising on a loose ball before Tyrone Marsh picked up a second booking for handball on the stroke of half-time.

Charlie Carter made sure the points would be going home with Dorking in the 61st minute when he converted from close range after Prior had glanced on a long throw into the area.

Chesterfield extended their lead atop the Vanarama National League to 16 points following a 3-0 victory over Southend.

James Berry put the table-topping Spireites ahead after just four minutes with a wonderful finish that curled into the top corner from the edge of the box.

An end-to-end start saw Tyrone Williams clear off the line with an overhead kick but the game settled down and it was not until the 73rd minute that Chesterfield doubled their lead through Joe Quigley, who tucked in the rebound after Armando Dobra had been denied by Southend goalkeeper Collin Andeng-Ndi.

Substitute Dobra would not be denied and, after some fine one-touch interplay, the Albanian rifled beyond Andeng-Ndi in the 81st minute as Chesterfield capitalised on Bromley’s defeat at Fylde to increase their advantage at the summit.

New Hartlepool boss Kevin Phillips got off to the perfect start with a 2-1 win over York in the Vanarama National League match at the Suit Direct Stadium.

Former England striker Phillips, who took over from John Askey, was in the dugout for the first time having watched Tuesday night’s defeat by Kidderminster from the stands because of a touchline ban held over from his spell with South Shields.

York had an early chance on the counter from a corner when Dipo Akinyemi’s cross from the right was headed wide by Will Davies.

Pools keeper Joel Dixon made a fine save to tip away a low shot from Billy Chadwick on the half-hour mark.

The deadlock was eventually broken with 17 minutes left when Emmanuel Dieseruvwe stabbed the ball in from close range and then added a late second from the penalty spot.

Akinyemi grabbed a consolation for York in stoppage time but it was too late.

The National League’s bottom side Oxford City gave their survival chances a huge boost with a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Ebbsfleet.

Andre Burley’s 36th-minute goal from close range was enough for the hosts, who now have 27 points, with their opponents, who fell into the drop zone as a result of the loss, just three better off.

Dominic Samuel led Ebbfsleet’s bid to get back into the game after half-time, having a header cleared off the line by Aaron Williams-Bushell.

He then saw a shot blocked by Burley and fired the rebound wide as his side tried in vain to find an equaliser.

Erico Sousa’s stoppage-time penalty handed Boreham Wood a point in an eight-goal National League thriller with Eastleigh.

Sousa’s spot-kick in the eighth minute of added time clinched a 4-4 draw at Meadow Park on a night when the home side trailed 2-0, led 3-2 and looked to have lost it at 4-3.

First-half goals from Jake Taylor and Enzio Boldewijn appeared to have put the visitors in the driving seat, but Sousa dragged the hosts back into it within three minutes of the restart and they were level six minutes later through Oscar Rutherford’s own goal.

Tyrone Marsh saw a 59th-minute penalty saved by Joe McDonnell and although Matt Robinson fired the home side in front with 24 minutes remaining, there looked like being a twist in the tail when Paul McCallum made it 3-3 before substitute Malachi Dotse put Eastleigh 4-3 ahead with a minute remaining.

However, Sousa kept his nerve when it mattered to ensure Boreham Wood finished with a point to show for their efforts.

Chesterfield extended their lead at the top of the Vanarama National League to 13 points as Will Grigg scored the only goal in a 1-0 success over Woking.

Grigg tucked home his 17th goal of the season following a Liam Mandeville free-kick after 24 minutes at the SMH Group Stadium.

Armando Dobra and Mandeville both had chances to add to the lead before Woking’s Dennon Lewis tested goalkeeper Harry Tyrer after the break.

Substitute Ricky Korboa went close to snatching a last-minute equaliser for the visitors but the Spireites held on to extend their run of successive home wins in all competitions to a club record-equalling 17.

Inih Effiong was Dagenham and Redbridge’s hero as they beat Dorking 2-1 in a dramatic Vanarama National League finish.

Josh Taylor’s stoppage-time goal appeared to have earned a point for the visitors but, in the 96th minute, Effiong scored his second of the game to win it.

Dagenham went close through Sydney Ibie and Jake Hessenthaler in the first 10 minutes in an otherwise uneventful first half.

Visiting keeper Harrison Male denied Frank Vincent but after another save from the same player, Effiong followed up to score.

Jason Prior was fouled in the box with the 90 minutes up and though Elliot Justham saved Seb Bowerman’s penalty, Taylor tucked away the rebound – but Effiong had the final say from Sam Ling’s long throw.

James Norwood scored a penalty in each half as Oldham made it four straight Vanarama National League wins with a 2-0 victory over Barnet to move up to fifth.

Latics took the lead seven minutes before the break after top scorer Norwood was brought down in the penalty area and fired the resulting spot-kick into the bottom corner.

Mike Fondop – who had tested Barnet goalkeeper Josh Keeley as the second half got under way – was felled in the area after 51 minutes and Norwood made no mistake as he picked out the top corner with some force for his second penalty of the night to take his league tally to 16 for the season.

Callum Stead sent a header against a post as third-placed Barnet failed in their attempt to pull a goal back, while – at the other end – Keeley pushed Latics debutant Tom Conlon’s free-kick onto a post but the points were already safe.

Substitute Dominic Samuel struck a late winner as Ebbsfleet snatched a 1-0 victory in their Vanarama National League clash at Maidenhead.

The former Blackburn and Gillingham striker netted eight minutes from time – just nine minutes after coming off the bench – after being teed up by Dominic Poleon in the box.

Maidenhead had the better chances of the first half at York Road and hit the bar through Ashley Nathaniel-George and the post through Casey Pettit.

Reece Smith also forced a good save from Mark Cousins after the break and Pettit missed a late chance to equalise when he shot wide in the 89th minute.

Will Davies struck in stoppage time as York won 2-1 at Oxford City to send the hosts to the bottom of the National League.

York had taken a deserved lead in first-half stoppage time when Dipo Akinyemi fired in on the rebound, having already seen an earlier shot strike the post.

Aaron Williams-Bushell brought the hosts level just after the hour-mark when Mitchell Roberts pulled the ball back into the centre for him to fire in.

York’s Ryan Fallowfield saw an audacious effort from midfield strike the crossbar as both sides had chances to take the win but, just as they had in the opening 45 minutes, York left it late before Davies won it at the death.

Promotion-chasing Bromley had to settle for a point in a 1-1 Vanarama National League draw at Aldershot.

Jack Barham fired into the side netting early on before Lorent Tolaj collected a through ball from Josh Stokes and converted at the second time of asking 10 minutes before half-time.

Callum Reynolds equalised for the visitors just before the hour mark, netting after Louis Dennis’ strike had been parried by Jordi van Stappershoef.

Grant Smith saved a Ryan Glover free-kick and Tolaj headed against a post late on as the hosts sought a winner but it finished all square.

AFC Fylde missed the chance to move out of the Vanarama National League relegation zone as FC Halifax fought back to draw 2-2 at Mill Farm.

Luke Charman drilled into the bottom corner to put Fylde ahead in the eighth minute and the Coasters soon doubled their lead as, in the 23rd minute, Nick Haughton raced onto a loose ball and finished with aplomb.

Halifax pulled a goal back when Angelo Cappello found Jamie Cooke in a good position in the 65th minute.

With nine minutes remaining, Florent Hoti denied Fylde the prospect of a third straight win with his fine equaliser.
