Alex Woodyard was shown his marching orders in the 19th minute of the contest at York Road, but Howe struck with four minutes left to cancel out Ashley Nathaniel-George’s second-half opener for Maidenhead.

Only one point separated the teams ahead of kick-off, but York’s hopes of a positive result were damaged when Woodyard caught Zico Asare with a poor challenge and received a red card.

After a goalless first half, Maidenhead won a penalty when Shawn McCoulsky was fouled inside the area and yet George Sykes-Kenworthy proved the hero for York with a fine save from Nathaniel-George’s spot-kick.

Nathaniel-George looked to have the last laugh when he lashed home two minutes later with 71 on the clock, but Howe pounced on a loose ball to score from close range and earn the 10 men a hard-fought point on the road.

Harry Cardwell ended his six-game goal drought to earn Southend a battling point at Gateshead with a 1-1 draw in the Vanarama National League.

Cheek opened the scoring after five minutes when he fired into the bottom corner after a fine team move and it was 2-0 four minutes before half-time when the forward rifled home after a corner.

A win at the Hive would have seen the hosts draw to within five points of leaders Chesterfield but they fell behind after 26 minutes when goalkeeper Laurie Walker brought down Mike Fondop and conceded a penalty, which James Norwood converted.

Walker had initially been shown a red card before the referee rescinded the decision and issued a yellow.

Barnet looked to have taken advantage of the reprieve when Harry Pritchard levelled from the spot 10 minutes into the second half.

But from there the visitors took control, Fondop restoring the lead before Norwood got his second from 12 yards.

Maidenhead responded just six minutes later when Reece Smith finished from inside the area to make things all square.

Altrincham missed a golden chance to equalise just past the half-hour when Chris Conn-Clarke saw his penalty saved by Rochdale goalkeeper Louie Moulden.

The hosts withstood more pressure before East hammered his second into the top corner in the 63rd minute, and Kairo Mitchell fired in a rebound eight minutes later to complete the scoring.

National League leaders Chesterfield returned to winning ways with a 2-0 success at Woking.

The Spireites had slumped to their first defeat in 14 league games at Southend on Saturday but were in no mood to let the hosts inflict another upset loss.

The visitors had the better chances in the opening period, with James Berry bringing a good save out of Alexis Andre before Joe Quigley slotted their opener on 39 minutes.

Quigley missed a chance to double his side’s lead midway through the second half before Armando Dobra made sure of the points 10 minutes from time when he slotted home from a Liam Mandeville cross.

City had travelled north on the back of two straight wins but could make few inroads and both Davies and Dipo Akinyemi came close to increasing the home side’s lead.
