Reigning champions Cavalier FC snapped Arnett Gardens' nine-game unbeaten streak with a 2-1 victory in their rescheduled Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League (JPL) clash at the Anthony Spaulding Complex on Thursday.
Goals from Shaquille Stein in the 28th minute and Jalmaro Calvin in the 88th propelled Cavalier to their sixth win of the season, as they inched up to fifth place on 22 points. The victory also marked Cavalier's second win on trot since their historic win in the Concacaf Caribbean Cup.
Despite the loss, Arnett Gardens, who got their goal from Jamone Shephard in the 42nd, had moments of resilience, especially after going down to 10 men in the 36th minute when Shamari Dyer received a red card.
They remain second on 27 points, just one point behind leaders Mount Pleasant FA (28 points). The top six is rounded out by Waterhouse (25 points), Montego Bay United (24 points), and Portmore United (22 points).
The game was lively from the start, with both teams showing attacking intent. Stein gave Cavalier the lead in the 28th minute when he finished off a well-worked play to silence the home crowd.
Things took a dramatic turn eight minutes later when Dyer was sent off, leaving Arnett Gardens with an uphill battle.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Arnett Gardens fought back, and Shephard leveled the score in the 42nd minute with his first goal of the season as the teams entered break deadlocked at 1-1.
The second half saw both sides pressing for the winner, but Cavalier eventually found the decisive moment when Calvin, showcasing his sharp finishing skills, netted his sixth goal of the season minute to secure all three points for the visitors.
With the win, Cavalier underscored their growing momentum as they aim to climb higher in the standings, while Arnett Gardens will look to regroup and bounce back in their next fixture against Dunbeholden on December 22. Cavalier will engage cellar dwellers Chapelton Maroons (nine points) on Sunday and Montego Bay United next Wednesday.
