The Jamaica Premier League (JPL) was thrown into disarray on Sunday after referees withdrew their services, forcing the postponement of all scheduled matches. The decision stems from a reported J$8 million in unpaid referees' fees, a debt owed by the Jamaica Professional Football Limited (PFJL), the entity responsible for managing the league. It remains unclear how long these outstanding payments have been overdue.
The referees’ withdrawal has left the PFJL scrambling for solutions, as the top-flight league faces yet another crisis. Sources indicate that the outstanding payments cover multiple rounds of matches, with match officials growing increasingly frustrated over the lack of resolution despite previous assurances.
While the PFJL has yet to issue a formal statement on the matter, it is understood that negotiations are ongoing in an attempt to resolve the impasse and resume league action as soon as possible. Meanwhile, clubs, players, and fans have been left in limbo, with no clear indication of when matches will resume.
Dennis Chung, General Secretary of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), told Sportsmax.TV that they are aware of the situation and are working towards a resolution by Monday, March 3. However, efforts to get a response from Cardella Samuels, Head of the JFF Referees Department, were unsuccessful as calls went unanswered.
