Hayley Matthews and the Mumbai Indians Women ended the league phase of the 2025 Women’s Premier League (WPL) with an 11-run loss to defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore Women at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.

RCB, after being put in to bat by Mumbai skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, posted a respectable 199-3 from their 20 overs at the crease thanks to 53 off 37 balls from captain Smriti Mandhana and 49* off 38 balls from Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry.

Mandhana’s knock included six fours and three sixes while Perry hit five fours and a six.

Richa Ghosh also played well for 36 off 22 balls including five fours and a six while Georgia Wareham also hit five fours and one six on her way to 31* off just 10 balls.

Matthews picked up 2-37 from four overs.

Mumbai then fell agonizingly short of their target, reaching 188-9 in their 20 overs.

Nat Sciver-Brunt led the way with 69 off 35 balls including nine fours and two sixes while Sajeevan Sajana and Harmanpreet made 23 and 20, respectively.

Matthews also looked good for her 19 off 16 balls at the top of the innings.

Sneh Rana took 3-26 from her four overs while Kim Garth and Ellyse Perry each ended with two wickets.

As a result of the loss, the Mumbai Indians finished second on the points standings on 10, trailing the Delhi Capitals on net run rate.

This means Mumbai will take on Deandra Dottin’s Gujarat Giants in the eliminator on Thursday with the winner facing the Capitals in Saturday’s final.
