The top four seeds at the 45th All Jamaica Senior Squash Championships made light work of their first-round opponents, advancing in straight sets at the Liguanea Club in Kingston, the home of the Jamaica Squash Association.
Top seed Lewis Walters wasted little time in dispatching Alex Chin in just 17 minutes, winning 11-5, 11-1, 11-2. Walters came out strong in the first game, racing to a 9-1 lead before Chin managed to get a few points on the board, finishing the game at 11-5. The second game was even more one-sided, with Walters reaching game point at 10-0 before Chin managed a single point, closing at 11-1. Chin started game three positively, taking the first two points, but that was all he could muster as Walters rattled off 11 unanswered points to seal the match.
Though pleased with his performance, Walters remained cautious about the upcoming rounds.
"Hopefully I'll be playing on Saturday and I'll be winning, but I'm just taking it one match at a time."
When asked about the level of competition, Walters acknowledged the challenge ahead.
"I'll tell you in two days’ time (laughs). There are really good players in this tournament. I've had some battles with them in the past, so I'm definitely not going to be taking any of them lightly. I'll just come out and bring my best game."
Making his first competitive appearance in Jamaica since 2019, Walters was thrilled to be back.
"It's great to be back here. I haven’t played in Jamaica in five or six years, but it feels good to return, especially with the great crowd tonight. It’s always a pleasure to be back on court here."
Second seed Bruce Burrowes had an equally dominant performance, securing an 11-2, 11-4, 11-2 victory over Ethan Miller, the recently crowned junior champion. Miller, who won the All Jamaica Junior Squash title earlier this week, put up a fight but was ultimately outmatched by Burrowes' experience and skill.
Number three seed Tahjia Lumley faced tougher opposition from Aman Dhiman but still emerged victorious in straight sets (11-8, 11-6, 11-8) in a 25-minute contest. Dhiman put up a fight, especially in the first and third games, but Lumley’s superior shot-making made the difference.
Fourth seed Jonathan Walker made quick work of Nirmal Balani, closing out the match in just 17 minutes with an 11-2, 11-1, 11-7 victory. Walker was in control throughout, never allowing Balani to build momentum.
In another straight-sets victory, Jake Mahfood—who captained Team Blown to victory in last year’s KPMG League—defeated Aaron Levy 11-6, 11-4, 11-5. However, the match was briefly interrupted in the second game by a sudden downpour, which caused leaks on the court. The players were forced to switch courts before resuming, with Mahfood maintaining his composure to complete the win.
