Holmwood Technical’s Class Four relay team was the only casualty among the medal contenders in the Girls’ 4x100m relays, as all other top prospects safely secured their spots in the final on day three of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium on Thursday.

The team, considered one of the frontrunners for gold, saw their hopes dashed when their baton fell on the anchor leg, eliminating them from contention and leaving the remaining finalists to battle for the top spot.

In Class One, the anticipated medal contenders all eased into the final, led by Hydel High (45.62s) and Edwin Allen (45.76s). St Jago (46.15s), Holmwood Technical (46.05s), Excelsior High (46.50s), and Vere Technical (47.19s) also advanced automatically, while St Mary High (47.44s) and St Andrew High for Girls (47.21s) progressed as the fastest non-automatic qualifiers.

Class Two had its share of tense moments, but Wolmer’s Girls led the pack with a decent 45.59s. Edwin Allen (46.49s), St Jago (45.74s), Immaculate Conception (46.61s), and Vere Technical (46.83s) all advanced automatically, while Holmwood Technical (46.91s) and Mount Alvernia (47.60s) squeezed through as non-automatic qualifiers.

The Class Three qualifiers saw St Jago dominate with a blistering 46.03s. Edwin Allen (46.49s), Holmwood Technical (47.35s), and Hydel High (47.51s) secured their places, while Convent of Mercy Alpha (47.36s), Mount Alvernia (47.72s), St Mary High (47.86s), and Ferncourt High (47.89s) completed the final lineup.

Meanwhile, in Class Four, Hydel High (48.35s) topped the qualifiers, closely followed by Edwin Allen (48.49s), St Andrew High for Girls (48.75s), and St Elizabeth Technical (48.95s). Immaculate (48.74s), St Jago (48.88s), Vere Technical (48.93s), and Convent of Mercy Alpha (49.08s) will also battle for the gold medal.

With Holmwood Technical’s unfortunate mishap, the door is now wide open in the Class Four final, adding an extra layer of intrigue to what promises to be an electrifying showdown.

The relay finals are scheduled for Saturday.
