The strength of Jamaica’s female sprinters was on display as five of the island’s top collegiate athletes—Brianna Lyston, Shenese Walker, Oneka Wilson, Neisha Burgher, and Dejeanea Oakley—secured spots in the finals of their respective events at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Track and Field Championships in Virginia Beach.
Defending NCAA 60m champion and LSU standout Brianna Lyston advanced to her second consecutive final, clocking 7.17 seconds to finish tied for fifth-fastest overall alongside USC’s Samirah Moody. Lyston, who recently finished second at the SEC Championships, will aim to defend her title against a stacked field led by Georgia’s Kaila Jackson, who topped the qualifiers in 7.11 seconds.
Also securing a place in the 60m final was Florida State’s Shenese Walker, who finished just behind Lyston in 7.18 seconds, ranking eighth overall.
Clemson’s Oneka Wilson, who narrowly missed out on last year’s final, ensured there would be no repeat disappointment as she clocked 7.99 seconds to advance as the third-fastest qualifier. Wilson, who has a season’s best of 7.95, will be looking to go even faster in the final as she battles Texas A&M’s Jaiya Covington (7.94) and Oregon’s Aaliyah McCormick (7.97), the top two qualifiers.
Neisha Burgher of UTEP booked her place in the 200m final with a time of 22.91 seconds, making her the sixth-fastest qualifier. TCU’s Indya Mayberry led all qualifiers with 22.50 seconds, but Burgher, who has run 22.39 this season, is expected to be a strong contender for a podium finish.
Georgia’s Dejeanea Oakley secured her spot in the 400m final, clocking 51.85 seconds to qualify as the seventh-fastest overall. She will be up against Auburn’s Vimbayi Maisvorewa, who posted the fastest time of 51.51 seconds, setting up a highly competitive final.
