Mehar Trehan and Ethan Miller were the standout performers on the junior side of the 45th All Jamaica Squash Championship, and both were overwhelmed with excitement after securing big wins at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston on Monday.
Trehan and Miller delivered dominant performances to claim their respective titles, as the juniors took center stage for the first two days of the prestigious tournament, which began on Sunday.
In the Girls' Under-19 final, Trehan showcased remarkable resilience, overcoming Sanjana Nallapati in a thrilling five-set battle. The reigning Caribbean Under-17 Squash champion lost the first two games 6/11 and 9/11, but stormed back to claim the next three 11/6, 11/7, and 11/4, to secure a 3-2 victory in front of a vocal crowd.
Trehan was overjoyed with her win.
"It feels amazing. I'm going to have the best sleep of my life, oh my gosh. This was a good day!" she beamed.
Acknowledging the intensity of the match, she praised both her opponent and her own determination.
"That was hard-fought, and we both gave it our all today. I'm super proud of her and super proud of myself. It came down to mental strength. I've played her so much that I know her game inside out, and she knows mine. We're neighbors, you know! I really focused on my strokes and strategy, and that brought it home for me today," Trehan added.
On the boys' side, Miller dominated Max Henzell in the Under-17 final, winning in straight sets, 11/1, 11/2, and 11/5.
Miller credited his disciplined preparation for his commanding performance.
"My preparation is key. I do a lot of fitness work, running, solo court time, practicing drives, shots, and technique. I also play matches to improve awareness. That’s my routine, and I felt well-prepared coming into this tournament. It feels amazing! Putting in the training, pushing hard, and then seeing my efforts pay off in competition—it’s a great feeling. I'm just grateful to have the opportunity and a healthy body to compete," Miller declared.
Meanwhile, in the Girls' Under-17/Under-15, Priya Stoddart defeated Marley Pryce 3-1, while Marley Pryce edged out Verenya Singh in a tight Under-13 five-setter (11/5, 8/11, 7/11, 11/7, 11/4).
The Boys' Under-15 was won by Govind Venugopal, who bettered Judah Tavares-Finson in another five-set battle (11/8, 7/11, 7/11, 11/6, 6/11), while the Under-13 crown went to Jaden Emery, who took down Dendra Stoddart in straight sets (11/4, 11/6, 11/4).
With the junior champions crowned, attention now turns to the senior categories, which began on Monday and will run until the finals on Saturday. The tournament features Men’s and Women’s divisions, along with Men’s B, Women’s B, Over 40, and Over 50 categories.
Defending champion Mary Mahfood is back to defend her title, while number one seed Louis Walter returns to Jamaican competition for the first time since 2019.
