Olympic discus champion Roje Stona is set to embark on an exciting new chapter in his athletic career, as he has been invited to participate in the NFL’s prestigious International Player Pathway (IPP) programme in January 2025. Stona, who made history by becoming Jamaica’s first Olympic gold medalist in a throwing event at the Paris 2024 Games, will be among 14 athletes taking part in the 10-week training camp in Florida.
The IPP programme, established in 2017, aims to identify and develop global talent for American football. The selected athletes will undergo intensive field and classroom training to refine their skills before showcasing their abilities to NFL scouts ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Stona’s transition to American football comes after a stint training with two NFL teams last spring, where his impressive physical attributes caught the attention of scouts. NFL analyst Lance Zierlein described Stona as a "track standout with an NFL body type and traits," highlighting his explosive hips, core strength, long arms, and large hands—qualities that align with a potential role as a tight end.
While Stona has never played competitive football, his athleticism and commitment make him an intriguing developmental prospect. “If he’s committed to making it, he might be worth prioritizing as an undrafted free agent,” Zierlein noted.
The IPP programme has a proven track record, with 41 international players having joined NFL teams since its inception. Of those, 23 are currently affiliated with teams, and six have earned spots on active rosters. One of its most notable success stories is Jordan Mailata, who transitioned from age-grade rugby league to become a key offensive lineman for the Philadelphia Eagles, helping them reach the Super Bowl in 2023.
Stona’s journey will place him alongside other global talents, including Australian rugby union international Jordan Petaia, as they seek to make their mark in the NFL.
