Jamaican Olympic discus throw champion Roje Stona is one of 14 athletes currently involved in a 10-week camp run by NFL International Player Pathway (IPP) programme with the aim of earning an NFL contract.

Stona, a former track and field star for the University of Arkansas who took Olympic gold in Paris in August, was contacted soon after that triumph and presented with the chance of taking up a spot in the 10-week IPP program.

Sportsmax.tv caught up with the former St. Jago High man about how things are going at the camp at the RJRGleaner Sports Foundation National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Friday.

“It’s been going great so far. I’m learning a lot on top of what I did last year so I’m compounding the knowledge from last year with what I’m learning now and trying to get better at it,” said Stona who was named as the nation’s National Sportsman of the Year for the first time.

“It’s a great feeling. Being among a great group of nominees, to be selected is a huge deal for me,” he said on winning the prestigious award.

The 25-year-old has previous experience playing American Football having participated in Arkansas football's pro day in March and participating in minicamps with the New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers last spring.

Scouts at that pro day said he had the skill set to try out as both a defensive end and tight end.

The question remains, however, whether or not Stona will put a pause on his track and field career if this NFL opportunity does indeed come to fruition with a contract.

He says he’s taking it day-bay-day.

“Right now, it’s hard to tell. Just started my main training camp for the NFL. I have a few more weeks to get familiar with that and see where things go from there,” he said.

The IPP Camp started in January and will run until March when the 14 participants will showcase their skills at the University of South Florida’s Pro Day.
