Former World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champion Livingston Bramble, the eccentric and unpredictable fighter who rose to international fame in the 1980s, has died. He was 64.

News of his passing was first reported by the U.S. Virgin Islands Daily News, with confirmation from the WBA. The cause of death has not been made public.

Bramble, who was born in St. Kitts and Nevis and raised on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, etched his name in boxing history with thrilling back-to-back victories over Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini in 1984 and 1985. The wins earned him the WBA lightweight title and established him as one of the most colourful figures in the sport.

Known in and out of the ring for his distinctive Rastafarian identity and unconventional persona, Bramble—who also went by Ras-I Alujah Bramble—was far from your average pugilist. A committed vegetarian and snake enthusiast, he became famous for entering the ring with a live snake draped around his shoulders, captivating audiences and bewildering opponents.

“Bramble was a true wildcard — an unorthodox fighter whose skill and durability were often underrated,” the WBA said in a statement. “Beyond his ability in the ring, Bramble was known for his eccentric personality.”

After defending his title twice, including a rematch win over Mancini and a successful bout against Tyrone Crawley, Bramble lost the belt in 1986 to Edwin “El Chapo” Rosario. Though he fought for another decade, he was never able to return to championship glory.

He retired with a professional record of 40 wins, 26 losses, and 3 draws, with 25 knockouts.

Livingston Bramble remains a legendary figure in Caribbean and international boxing circles—remembered not only for his achievements in the ring but for a flair that made him unforgettable.
