Molynes United, Chapelton Maroons play out goalless stalemate in tight JPL contest

Molynes United and Chapelton Maroons played to a hard-fought 0-0 draw in their Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League (JPL) encounter at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium on Sunday.

Despite flashes of attacking intent, both teams struggled to convert opportunities into goals in what proved to be an evenly contested affair.

With the result, both teams inched up to 17 points, as Chapelton Maroons remain eighth and Molynes United ninth on the 14-team standing.

The opening 45 minutes saw both teams demonstrate a willingness to attack, but neither managed to produce a decisive moment. With only one shot on target apiece, the first half was characterized by defensive discipline and midfield battles.

Molynes United's Peter McGregor showed glimpses of promise, while Chapelton Maroons’ defence, led by goalkeeper Jovell Plunkett, stood firm.

The tempo increased after the break, with both sides coming close to breaking the deadlock. In the 47th minute, McGregor had a golden opportunity for Molynes United, but his header under pressure narrowly went wide of the target.

McGregor again had what was arguably the best chance of the contest in the 62nd minute when he was gifted possession by Chapelton’s Osani Ricketts but squandered the chance, sending his shot wide as Plunkett advanced to close the angle.

Chapelton’s responded three minutes later through Levaughn Williams, who broke through the Molynes defence and unleashed a powerful right-footed drive that was expertly parried by Molynes goalkeeper Darren Donaie, diving to his right.

Chapelton again went close in the 71st minute when Andrew Vanzie, capitalized on a loose ball at the far post, fired a left-footed shot that St Lucian Donaie saved brilliantly at his near post.

After absorbing Chapelton’s sustained attacking spell, Molynes again went on the charge in the 76th minute when Shamaro Dennis found space for a right-footed effort, but his shot sailed wide of the mark.

Molynes should have secured all three points in the dying moments, as Dennis was again through on goal, but his effort was thwarted by a well-timed charge from Plunkett, who denied them a dramatic late winner in time added.

The draw left both coaches with mixed emotions—content with a point but aware that missed opportunities cost them the full three.

Molynes United’s Jermaine Thomas took heart from his team's display.

“I thought we were wasteful in front of goal; we created some good opportunities...McGregor had a really good one with him and the goalkeeper alone, and we had a couple others that we just didn’t take. But guess what, we did well today, and there are a lot of positives we can take from this performance as we go forward,” Thomas said in a post-game interview.

His counterpart, Jermaine Douglas, was a bit more displeased.

“In the first half, I think we had control of the game, and we created a couple of opportunities that we should have scored. This should not have been a nil-all draw based on the opportunities we created. In the second half, we were a bit ragged; we lost a bit of our structure, so we have to keep working on that to get it right going forward,” Douglas noted.
