Defending champions Kingston CC open 2025 Michael Holding Senior Cup with innings and four-run win over Boys Town; Melbourne, Kensington also among outright winners

Defending champions Kingston CC, Melbourne CC and Kensington CC were among the outright winners in round one of the Michael Holding Senior Cup over the weekend.

At Sabina Park, Kingston defeated Boys Town by an innings and four runs. Kingston posted 284-6 declared from 68 overs in their turn at the crease thanks to 56* off 78 balls from captain Akim Fraser and 50* off 104 balls from schoolboy Nicoli McKenzie, younger brother of Jamaica Scorpions batsman Kirk McKenzie.

Opener Javaughn Buchanan also hit 43 while Derval Green and Mickayle Riley hit 36 and 32, respectively.

Dawit Morgan took 4-73 from 20 overs to lead the Boys Town bowling.

Boys Town were then restricted to 139-9 in 43.4 overs in their first innings and then bowled out for 141 in 34 overs following on.

Shaquille Greenwood hit a rapid 53 off 32 balls in the first innings before retiring hurt while Alexio Daley contributed 38.

Derval Green was the main wicket-taker in the first innings for Kingston with 4-34 from 11.4 overs while Patrick Harty took 2-49 from 16 overs.

Harty did the bulk of the damage in the second innings, picking up 5-55 from his 11 overs while Buchanan took 3-8 from five overs. Captain Stephan Pink hit 64* off 98 balls.

Elsewhere, Melbourne CC opened their campaign with a dominant innings and 78-run win over Kingston & St. Andrew CA at Maxfield Park.

Melbourne dismissed KSACA for 107 in 25.2 overs after winning the toss on Saturday with off-spinner Warren Robinson and left-arm seamer Khari Campbell leading the way with 4-21 from 6.2 overs and 3-42 from 10 overs, respectively.

Melbourne then posted 304-2 from 70 overs before declaring their innings closed early on Sunday with a lead of 197 runs.

Renalda Ingram led the way with 113* off 154 balls including 10 fours and four sixes while David Bird fell late on Saturday for a 169-ball 97 including seven fours.

Bird’s opening partner, Kymani Wilson, made 60 off 70 balls including five fours and a six on Saturday.

KSACA did slightly better in their second innings, making 119 before being bowled out in the 29th over.

Campbell added to his three first innings wickets with 5-22 off eight overs in the second innings while leg-spinners Matthew Comerie and Abhijai Mansingh picked up 2-24 off 5.5 overs and 2-30 off seven over, respectively.

At Nelson Oval, visiting Kensington CC handed Lucas CC an innings and 57-run defeat to open their season positively.

Lucas, after winning the toss and choosing to bat, were dismissed for 107 in just 29.1 overs on day one.

Schoolboy Demarco Scott was the only batsman to offer any resistance with 46 against a balanced attack from Kensington’s bowlers.

Off-spinner Roshane Roach picked up 3-15 from 4.1 overs while left-arm spinner Ryan Francis and pacer Anthony Dackers took two wickets, each.

In reply, Kensington made 315 all out off 78.2 overs for a lead of 208. Leroy Lugg led the way with 108 off 124 balls including 11 fours and three sixes while Ryan Francis (37), Denneil Griffiths (33), Alex Hinds (31) and Javardi Francis (31) all contributed well.

Kwame Francis led the way with the ball for Lucas with 5-43 from 11.2 overs.

Ryan Francis then added another four wickets to his tally to help Kensington dismiss Lucas for 151 in 52.4 overs in the second innings.

Francis finished with 4-38 from 19 overs while Alex Hinds took 3-23 from 10 overs in support.

Justin Beckford hit 49 off 81 balls to lead Lucas’ second innings batting while captain Nicholas Lewin and Jemari Harris hit 38 and 37, respectively.
