West Indies One-day International captain Shai Hope’s debut in the Australian Big Bash League was less than ideal as his Hobart Hurricanes were hammered by six wickets by the Melbourne Renegades at the GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on Thursday morning.

It took the rampant Renegades just 12.4 overs to dismiss the Hurricanes for a lowly 74 after skipper Will Sutherland opted to field first after winning the toss.

Hope was one of only three Hurricanes batsmen to reach double figures with his 13 off 14 balls batting at number three.

Captain Nathan Ellis top scored with 35 while opener Mitchell Owen made 10.

Sutherland was the Renegades’ best bowler on the day with 3-14 while Fergus O’Neill was not far off with 3-16. Tom Rogers also bowled well with 3-25. All three bowled three overs.

The Renegades then needed only nine overs to reach 78-4 and secure their first win of the season in their second outing.

New Zealander Tim Seifert, a part of the CPL title-winning St. Lucia Kings side from earlier this year, led the way with 37* off 19 balls including four fours and two sixes.

Despite the heavy defeat, Ellis completed a good day for himself individually with 2-12 from three overs.

Hope and the Hurricanes will look to bounce back when they take on the Perth Scorchers in Hobart on Saturday.
