Cavani James once again rose above the pack as some of Jamaica’s brightest junior golf talents took centre stage at the 2025 Sandals Foundation Care for Kids Junior Golf Tournament at Sandals Upton Estate Golf & Country Club on Saturday.

James, the defending champion, delivered a masterclass in composure and precision to score 28 out of a possible 30 points across the tournament’s three competitive skill areas—putting, chipping, and driving. His near-flawless performance secured him a coveted place in the upcoming Sandals Golf and Jerk Festival, scheduled for May 31, 2025.

"It was a good experience. I had fun, and it feels good to win again. I think I’ve improved a lot, especially on my chipping. I chipped very well, getting close to the hole. But I still think there’s room for improvement, and it’s good that I’ll be playing with the senior guys again. I can learn from them and keep getting better," the 13-year-old James said.

With his mother, Marshalee Bascoe, beaming on the sidelines and his sister, Tashalee Freeburn, also competing, Saturday’s victory felt like a family triumph.

"I am very proud of them. Golf is a good sport, and I’m glad they both decided to enter. The programme is amazing, not just for their golf development but for discipline and life skills too," Bascoe shared.

James was joined on the podium by Jace Sutherland, who scored 22 points, and Kavar, who finished third with 20 points. The tournament, now in its second year, has fast become a key qualifier for the Sandals Golf and Jerk Festival, where Jamaica’s junior and adult golfers will share the green for a day of competition, camaraderie, and culinary delights.

Beyond the fairway battles, the tournament embodies a deeper mission of empowering young people through sport. According to Karen Zacca, Director of Operations at the Sandals Foundation, the programme shapes not just athletes but leaders, fostering confidence, discipline, and community values among its participants.

“This is more than a tournament; it’s a celebration of potential and community. We’re proud of how far these young golfers have come. And this year’s festival is going a step further. With the help of Dr. Fernandez and the St. Ann Health Department, we’ll be providing mobile dental care to children in underserved communities. It’s about reaching those who need it most,” Zacca revealed.

For the Golf and Jerk Festival, the course will be divided into three six-hole sections — scramble, better ball, and alternate shot — with each segment featuring a jerk vendor and beverage station, competing not just in flavour but also for bragging rights.

Jonathan Newnham, Director of Golf at Sandals Golf & Country Club, pointed out that the evolution of players like James is a testament to the programme’s impact.

“We’ve seen these kids grow, not just in swing technique but in confidence and maturity. Some could barely hold a club when they started. Now, they’re holding their own alongside seasoned adults. It’s incredible to witness, and this festival is another opportunity for them to shine,” Newnham noted.

Meanwhile, with the Sandals Foundation celebrating its 16th anniversary, proceeds from this year’s festival will support the continued growth of the Junior Golf Programme, as the foundation continues to make strides in education, health, and community development.

The tournament is made possible by a host of corporate partners, including Digicel Jamaica.
