Dejeana Oakley, Michelle Smith, and Frederick Twins Shine at Ted Nelson Classic

Caribbean track and field stars Dejeana Oakley of Jamaica, Michelle Smith from the British Virgin Islands, and twins Sole and Sanaa Frederick from Trinidad and Tobago delivered standout performances at the Ted Nelson Classic in Bryan-College Station, Texas, on Saturday. Their impressive showings in the 200m, 60m, and the 4x400m relay underscored the strength and potential of the region’s emerging talent.

Oakley and Smith were part of a dominant women’s 4x400m relay team that set a meet record with a blistering time of 3:30.39, shattering the previous mark by over two seconds. Alongside teammates Sydney Harris and Aaliyah Butler, the quartet became the No. 3 performers in their program's history and now holds the fastest NCAA time this season. Their performance not only highlighted their dominance but also set a high standard for the rest of the indoor track and field season.

In the 200m, Sole Frederick clocked a personal best of 23.61, finishing third behind Taejha Badal of Texas State (23.56) and winner Iyana Gray of TCU (23.27). Frederick’s performance marked a significant milestone in her freshman season as she continues to emerge as a force in the competitive event.

Sanaa Frederick matched her sister’s brilliance in the 60m, finishing second with a time of 7.41, narrowly missing out on first place to TCU’s Iyana Gray (7.40). Her explosive speed and consistency have established her as one to watch this indoor season.

The performances of Oakley, Smith, and the Frederick twins at the Ted Nelson Classic exemplify the depth of talent emerging from the Caribbean. As the indoor season progresses, these athletes will undoubtedly continue to inspire and make headlines, solidifying their places among the best in collegiate track and field.
