Jamaican Olympic silver medalist Kishane Thompson got his indoor season off to a winning start with a 60m victory at the Astana Indoor Meet for Amin Tuyakov Prizes – the opening World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting of the year – in the Kazakhstan on Saturday.
His winning time in the final was 6.56, slightly slower than the 6.48 into a negative wind he opened the season with at the Central Hurdles, Relays and Field Events Meet at the GC Foster College last week in Jamaica.
In the heats, Thompson was slow out of the blocks but still booked his place in the final comfortably with 6.58.
There was a bit of a worry on Saturday as the 23-year-old grimaced over the line and limped momentarily in the aftermath of the final.
The reason for this may have been that this was Thompson’s first time racing in the winter temperatures he experienced in the central Asian country.
“This is my first-time experience, to see so much snow and feel so cold. It was, of course, interesting but I was very, very cold,” he said in the press conference before the race on Friday.
Oman’s Ali Anwar Baluchi was second to Thompson and Japan’s Shuhei Tada third in 6.60 and 6.62, respectively.
In the women’s 60m final, Tia Clayton, Thompson’s training partner at MVP Track Club under Stephen Francis, broke the meeting record, clocking 7.18 for a comfortable win while twin sister Tina, a double world U20 champion, was third. The twins were separated by Portugal’s Lorene Bazolo.
Tia was the fastest in the heats as well with 7.22.
Elsewhere, Bajan World and Olympic medalist Sada Williams, who also trains at MVP, navigated her way through the field on the second lap of the women’s 400m to win in 53.51.
