Holmwood Technical’s Cindy Rose was always the one to watch in the Girls’ Class One 800m final, and she did not disappoint.
With the weight of expectation on her shoulders and the bittersweet motivation of watching her younger sisters, Jovi and Kerrita, fall just short of gold in their respective races, Cindy delivered a clinical performance to claim the crown on the final day of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium on Saturday.
From the gun, Cindy took control, running a measured race, staying relaxed through the first lap before gradually increasing the tempo down the back straight. Her teammate, Florence Nafamba, stayed close, trying to challenge, but as they entered the home stretch, Cindy had another gear, pulling away with a commanding surge to win in 2:10.59s. Nafamba held on for second in 2:12.03s, ensuring Holmwood secured maximum points in the event. Edwin Allen’s Monique Stewart (2:14.38s) finished third.
The Rose sisters came into the final day of Champs with dreams of a golden sweep. Jovi Rose, the defending Class Two champion, had her eyes on back-to-back titles, but a tough race saw her boxed in on the inside, leaving her struggling to find space to attack. When she finally did, it was too late.
Instead, Alikay Reynolds of Alphansus Davis seized the moment, taking control of the race with a strong final 200m to win in 2:11.58s. Jovi had to settle for silver in 2:12.78s, while Edwin Allen’s Kevongaye Fowler (2:13.97s) claimed third.
In Class Three, Holmwood’s Kerrita Rose also fought bravely, but she could not match the late surge of Edwin Allen’s Aneka Lowe (2:16.36s) and Romeann Gray (2:16.45s), who delivered a crucial one-two finish for their team. Kerrita held on for third in 2:20.30s, adding another medal to the family’s collection.
