Kwame Thomas headed Aldershot into the National League play-off places in a 1-0 win away to a Gateshead side who played almost half the match with a defender deputising in goal.

Gateshead had goalkeeper Nathan Harness sent off in the 47th minute for bringing down James Daly outside the box and, with no stopper on the bench, Louis Storey went between the posts for the rest of the night.

Storey made a good save to keep out Cian Harries’ free-kick in the 51st minute, but could do nothing as the visitors took the lead 10 minutes later.

Thomas got on the end of a looping cross from Josh Barrett to head in, and it proved enough for a win that puts them one point above FC Halifax, who host Oldham on Thursday.

Boreham Wood nudged closer to National League safety after settling for a goalless draw at mid-table Rochdale.

The visitors headed into the game on the back of two straight wins that had taken them to the brink of safety and knew victory would lift them out of the bottom four.

Rochdale had the better of the first-half chances with D’Mani Mellor twice coming close, while Ryan East rattled the crossbar on the half-hour mark.

Boreham Wood grew into the game and had their best chance midway through the second half when Lee Ndlovu just failed to convert after home goalkeeper Jacob Chapman spilled the ball in the box.

Wealdstone require just a point from their final game at Oldham on Saturday to mathematically secure National League safety after Chris Maguire’s 88th-minute strike earned Eastleigh a 1-0 win.

Maguire bent a superb free-kick over the head of Stones goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst to seal his side’s third consecutive win.

Wealdstone also went into the game in fine form and threatened to claim an early advantage as Nathan Ferguson came close before Aaron Henry hit the bar direct from a corner.

But Eastleigh recovered and Maguire missed an opportunity to put the visitors in front before he rifled home the winning free-kick with two minutes left.

Bromley secured their place in the Vanarama National League play-off semi-finals with a 3-1 victory over Oxford City at Court Place Farm.

The hosts could not recover from conceding two early goals in a defeat that casts them further adrift at the foot of the table.

Ben Krauhaus was on target for promotion-chasing Bromley in the second minute and just three minutes later Idris Odutayo had made it two with his first goal for the club.

Corey Whiteley tucked home a rebound to make it 3-0 in the 63rd minute before Harvey Greenslade pulled a goal back for the hosts 11 minutes later.

Play-off hopefuls Halifax were held to a goalless draw by lowly Ebbsfleet in the Vanarama National League.

Halifax dominated the match, which was played at Accrington’s Wham Stadium due to The Shay pitch being unplayable, but could not find a way through.

Max Wright hit the side-netting and Jamie Cooke shot narrowly wide in the first half.

After the break Ebbsfleet goalkeeper Mark Cousins made saves from Cooke and Luke Summerfield to secure a point for the visitors.

Gateshead secured their place in the National League play-offs with a 2-1 win over champions Chesterfield, who suffered a fourth successive defeat since wrapping up the title.

The home side – facing a third game in the space of five days after losing at Fylde and Maidenhead – took the lead in the 12th minute through a penalty from Luke Hannant.

Chesterfield fell further behind in the 32nd minute when midfielder Hannant converted another spot-kick – and Spireites boss Paul Cook was shown a yellow card for his protests on the touchline.

The visitors pulled a goal back on the hour mark when defender Louis Storey turned a cross into his own net, but Gateshead held on to make sure of their play-off spot.

Boreham Wood gave their National League survival hopes a major boost as they made it back-to-back wins by beating Aldershot 3-0 on the road.

Lee Ndlovu and Erico Sousa’s penalty put the Wood in control at the interval and Kabongo Tshimanga added a third goal in the second half to lift them to within two points of 20th-placed Ebbsfleet with two games remaining.

The visitors, who halted a six-game losing run last week with victory over Wealdstone, went ahead in the 10th minute when Ndlovu drove into the box and fired home a low finish.

Sousa converted from the spot after Shots midfielder Ryan Glover had tripped David Agbontohoma and Tshimanga applied a neat finish in the 67th minute after running on to a ball over the top.

Aldershot had their chances, Josh Stokes and Jack Barham were denied by superb Nathan Ashmore saves, but their faltering play-off hopes suffered another setback as their winless run extended to six matches.

Dillon De Silva struck the only goal as relegation battlers Wealdstone won 1-0 at home against champions Chesterfield to boost their survival bid.

Former Torquay winger De Silva turned the ball home from close range as the Stones made it back-to-back victories and condemned the Spireites to a third straight defeat since they sealed automatic promotion three weeks ago.

Wealdstone were indebted to goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst for keeping the Spireites at bay in the first half, making crucial saves to deny Jeff King, Tarryn Allarakhia and Jamie Grimes.

Wealdstone twice threatened through De Silva in the second half as he headed a free-kick wide and then fired just off target from inside the penalty area.

But the winger made no mistake when another chance fell to him in the 74th minute, tapping home from close range to leave his side four points above the drop zone with two games to play.

First-half goals from Danny Collinge and Callum Stead helped Barnet to an excellent 2-0 win at seventh-placed Halifax.

In a match which could be a dress rehearsal for the Vanarama National League play-offs, Barnet took control from the off with Collinge scoring after only 10 minutes.

Just three minutes later, Stead doubled the visitors’ advantage and – although he was forced off later in the first 45 – Dean Brennan’s men withstood a second-half rally by the hosts to earn an impressive three points.

Barnet went ahead when Collinge was able to divert Jordan Crooper’s throw into the net.

It was 2-0 soon after when Stead fired in a second before he had to be withdrawn in the 40th minute.

Play-off hopefuls Halifax attempted to reduce the deficit in the second period but Tottenham loanee Josh Keeley made a number of fine stops to help the second-placed Bees to another win.

Gateshead’s National League play-off push suffered another setback following a second defeat of the week after Maidenhead came from behind with two late goals to secure a 2-1 win.

Having lost at Fylde on Thursday night, Gateshead got themselves in front through a penalty from Luke Hannant in the 54th minute.

The Magpies, who were on an unbeaten four-game run, fought back to equalise with six minutes left when Kevin Lokko flicked the ball in after a free-kick.

Maidenhead then snatched all three points in the third minute of stoppage time when striker Shawn McCoulsky ran onto a long ball to slot home a dramatic winner, which ended any lingering relegation worries.

Hartlepool came from behind to draw 1-1 with mid-table rivals Dagenham in their final Vanarama National League home match of the season at Victoria Park.

The Daggers took the lead in the 37th minute through a fine individual goal from Dion Pereira.

Pereira picked the ball up in the Hartlepool half and went on a surging run before slotting past Pools goalkeeper Peter Jameson.

Hartlepool improved after the break and were back on level terms just before the hour through Joe Grey, after he latched onto a pass from Emmanuel Dieseruvwe.

Oldham’s hopes of making a late push for the Vanarama National League play-offs were dented after being held to a 0-0 draw at relegated Oxford City.

The Latics came into the match winless in the last eight games but made a bright start at Marsh Lane as Hallam Hope stabbed an effort wide in the 12th minute and then saw another effort saved by goalkeeper Tom Watson.

The home side threatened just after the hour when a shot from captain Reece Fleet was pushed away by Latics keeper Matt Hudson before Oldham forward James Norwood saw his curled effort hit the post.

Watson then tipped a powerful effort from Dan Gardner wide and a late free-kick from Oxford midfielder Josh Ashby was pushed over by Hudson to make sure the points were shared.

Billy Chadwick and Dipo Akinyemi scored second-half goals to move York to the brink of safety with a crucial 2-0 home win against Woking.

Chadwick broke the deadlock just before the hour-mark and Akinyemi added a second as the Minstermen made it four wins from their last six matches to edge six points clear of the drop zone.

Former Hull midfielder Chadwick had forced Will Jaaskelainen into a superb first half save, but the Woking goalkeeper had no chance with his low angled finish in the 59th minute.

York doubled their lead in the 73rd minute when skipper Lenell John-Lewis slipped in Akinyemi and the forward curled an excellent finish inside Jaaskelainen’s far post.

Dorking’s relegation from the National League was confirmed after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Rochdale.

Wanderers’ fate was all-but sealed on Thursday night after they had let slip a 2-0 lead at Wealdstone to lose 4-2.

But they went down fighting at Spotland before Charlie Carter’s second-half opener for the visitors was cancelled out by Devante Rodney.

Rochdale had goalkeeper Jacob Chapman to thank for a goalless first period as he denied Alfie Rutherford and Josh Taylor.

Dorking took the lead in the 49th minute when Rutherford’s initial shot was blocked and Carter followed up to fire in off a post.

But Dale were not behind for long as Kairo Mitchell picked out Rodney and the forward slammed home an emphatic finish into the roof of the net.

Altrincham moved up to fourth in the Vanarama National League after a 2-0 win at Ebbsfleet.

Promotion-chasing Altrincham did the damage in the first half with Alex Newby scoring in the 35th minute before Regan Linney added another from the penalty spot four minutes later.

It helped Altrincham leapfrog Solihull Moors, who lost 3-0 at play-off rivals Bromley.

The deadlock was broken when a shot by Mitch Hancox deflected into the path of Newby, who fired in from close-range.

It was 2-0 with 39 minutes on the clock when Altrincham won a spot-kick, which Linney dispatched to put the visitors in control.

Ebbsfleet pushed for a way back into the contest but away goalkeeper Ethan Ross produced a string of excellent saves to preserve a clean sheet and earn his team all three points.

It means the relegation worries of 20th-placed Fleet are not over going into the final week of the campaign.
