Zaneta Alveranga and Christanya Shirley each won a gold medal at the 2020 UANA Cup that concluded in Lima, Peru on the weekend.

Alvaranga won the 15-17 50m butterfly in 27.92s which was a new meet record and a new national record.

The time eclipsed the previous record of 27.97 that was held by Venezuela’s Lyon Lismar.

It was the first time that Jamaica was winning the 50m butterfly at the UANA Cup.

Alvaranga also won a silver medal in the 50m freestyle in 26.56.

Christanya Shirley won Jamaica’s other gold medal the 11-12 50m Freestyle in 28.54 seconds.

ASAJ President Martin Lyn described the performance as a job well done for the five-member team the country sent to the championships.

“This is a great performance by the swimmers at a very high level,” Lyn said.

“The UANA Cup is contested by almost a quarter of the entire world so for us to achieve finals and medals at this very high standard, and this is an earlier age-group for us, is phenomenal and I am very proud of the athletes. On behalf of the ASAJ, I say job well done.”
