Yona Knight-Wisdom delivered a better-than-expected showing at the British Nationals at the Plymouth Life Centre on Saturday.
The 2019 Pan Games silver medallist finished second in the one-metre springboard and was fifth in the three-metre event despite suffering from fatigue.
Knight-Wisdom, who is 1.88m tall, scored 368.40 in the preliminary round of the one-metre springboard, the best score of the round before backing it up with a score of 364.10 which saw him finish with the silver medal.
In the three-metre dive, he went into the final in fifth place with a score of 397.25. He would score much better in the final (425.20) which was good enough for fifth place.
“It went better than I actually expected, especially considering the travel I had done just a few days beforehand,” he said.
Knight-Wisdom travelled to Jamaica to attend the RJR Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards held at the Jamaica Pegasus in Kingston on January 17. He was in Jamaica for just under 64 hours before flying back to the United Kingdom to get in his final preparations for the championships.
He revealed to Sportsmax.TV that the trip took its toll.
“I started to feel the tiredness. Just the whole trip started to catch up with me,” said the 24-year-old diver.
“When I got to the pool for the 3-metre preliminary, I felt a little more tired than normal. I still managed to compete well and compete properly.
“I felt like my competition head was switched on in a good way and even though my preparation wasn’t perfect, everything was solid.”
