Casper Ruud's bid to better his run to the 2022 Miami Open final was dashed on Tuesday, as he lost to Francisco Cerundolo in the last 16.

Casper Ruud was eliminated from the Miami Open at the last-16 stage by Francisco Cerundolo, on a rain-affected day at the Florida event.

World number six Ruud was already 6-4 5-1 down by the time heavy rain halted play on Tuesday, with the players leaving the court for three-and-a-half hours.

Ruud could have no complaints about that scoreline, having only managed three first-set winners before allowing two early breaks in the second set.

After the weather cleared, Cerundolo held serve in relative comfort to avenge his defeat to Ruud in the 2022 Miami Open semi-finals.

The 23rd seed will now face Grigor Dimitrov for a semi-final berth after he passed a stern test against home hope Brandon Nakashima to win 6-4 7-5 earlier on Tuesday.

There will be at least one American representative in the last eight, though, with Sebastian Korda beating Gael Monfils 6-4 2-6 6-4 either side of the rain-enforced stoppage.

He will face either Novak Djokovic or Lorenzo Musetti in the semis.

Data debrief: Cerundolo enjoying the sun

Cerundolo has enjoyed this year's Sunshine Double, also making the quarter-finals at Indian Wells two weeks ago before losing to Carlos Alcaraz.

He is just the third South American man to reach the quarter-finals at both Indian Wells and Miami in a single season, after Juan Ignacio Chela (2007) and Juan Martin del Potro (2009 and 2018).
