Reigning national shotgun champions Chad Ziadie and Aliana McMaster are favoured to retain their respective titles at this year’s PWD Winter Open Sporting Clays Tournament at the True-Juice Estate in St Catherine on Sunday.

Over 100 competitors are set to contest the expansive 17-station ‘driving’ course set by 19-time world champion Ben Hustwaithe. Start time is 9:30 am.

Zaidie is confident that he will give of his best despite the pressure to successfully defend his crown.

“As the defending champion of PWD last year, the first expectation is to defend that title on Sunday. Also, with some practice with Ben, who is setting the course, I feel like the competition will be a lot tougher as people who took the lessons with him are sharp, and they are looking forward to beating me this weekend. So it’s just for me to stay calm like I always do and just go in there with an open mind,” Ziadie said in a pre-tournament interview.

“I think everybody who will be competing on Sunday is looking forward to the course, so the expectation is just to go out there and have fun, keep a clear mind, don’t stress myself out too much, and just do what I do every weekend when there is a shoot—have fun and hope that the outcome is me winning again,” he added.

Zaidie, who won last year’s shoot with a score of 86, will again have to fend off challenges from six-time national shotgun champion Shaun Barnes and nine-time national shotgun champion and Jamaica Skeet Club president Ian Banks. Four-time national shotgun champion Christian Sasso, Craig Simpson, Todd Lazarus, Gerry Chin, Craig Davis, and Ryan Chen are also taking aim at top honours.

Meanwhile, McMaster will have the likes of Lori-Ann Harris, Marguerite Harris, Renee Rickhi, and Toni Barnes to contend with in the ladies category.

The shooters will compete in various classes from A to E, Juniors, Sub-Juniors, Ladies and Hunters or beginners. The course will feature an array of targets, such as true pairs, rabbits, and others.

Justin Samuda of PWD Gun Club expressed gratitude to sponsors ARB 4x4 Accessories, Toyota Jamaica, Scotia Investments, CRISS Marine Works, and Desmond Mair Insurance Brokers, among others, for their continued support of the event.
