Romeo Monteith, Jamaica’s National Rugby League coach is looking to 2021 as he aims to get the Reggae Warriors primed and ready for their debut at the Rugby League World Cup scheduled for October 23 to November 27 in England.

More teams than ever will compete to be crowned Rugby League World Cup Champions with four pools of four nations competing in 17 stadia across England. Jamaica will play in Group C along with New Zealand, Lebanon and Ireland.

With the possibility of practice games virtually non-existent, Monteith told Sportsmax.TV that the players are doing all they can in the current circumstances to maintain their fitness.

“At the moment players in Jamaica and the UK are staying in shape at home. They are all anxiously awaiting news on when their domestic competitions will resume,” Monteith said.

“All our 2020 games and training-camp plans have been scuttled, including games in Florida that had been scheduled for May, the UK in June and October and at home in Jamaica in November.”

Come next year, the head coach is keeping his fingers crossed that things go according to plan.

“For 2021, we are hoping we will be able to get games and camps in the UK in January, in the US in May, UK (June) and the UK (October). It is unlikely we will get a game in Jamaica in 2021,” he said.

“We are all aware that these plans depend on the pandemic coming under control in several countries and the necessary funding being raised through government and sponsorship, as well as player availability.”
