West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican says he is eager to play a pivotal role in the upcoming two-match series against Pakistan, with hopes of assisting the Caribbean side to a positive finish in their ICC World Test Championship campaign.
Having secured figures of two for 23 in the second innings of the three-day tour match against Pakistan Shaheens, Warrican, who is experiencing Pakistan for the first time, is optimistic about his impact in Multan conditions that are expected to favour spin throughout the series scheduled to begin on Friday.
“Preparation has been very well. We had a couple of days to train and played a practice game as well. I think the guys and myself took the opportunity to get familiar with the conditions and to prepare well for the Test series,” he told Cricket West Indies (CWI) media on Tuesday.
“Some of the things that we observed are that it is clearly going to be spin-friendly conditions, and the outfield is going to be very quick as well. So we have to be tuned in and ready to counteract the spin,” he added.
As one of three specialist slow bowlers in the squad, Warrican, a left-arm spinner, is ready to embrace the responsibility.
“In any position, you just have to embrace it and enjoy that challenge,” he said.
“For me, being one of the three specialist spinners, it’s just a case of enjoying the challenge and performing to the best of my ability to help the team defeat Pakistan in the series or at least draw the series—whatever outcome favours us,” he noted.
The series—a first for the West Indies in Pakistan in 18 years—marks the conclusion of the current ICC Test Championship cycle as well as the end of head coach Andre Coley’s tenure.
With that in mind, Warrican emphasized the importance of finishing strong.
“Anyone would look to have a brilliant climax. For us, we need those points to finish very strong, and just for us to figure as a team and finish the Test Championships with a bang,” he declared.
From an individual perspective, the 32-year-old Barbadian has clear plans for how he intends to approach the series. While conditions may tempt spinners to go all-out aggressive, he believes balance and discipline will be crucial.
“I don’t want to get carried away with the conditions. I just have to stick to the basics, be disciplined, put the balls in the right areas, and sometimes you just have to wait for something to happen,” Warrican stated.
“With spinning conditions, we as spinners have to be 100 percent aggressive, but there also has to be a balance of sticking to the basics and being very disciplined,” he ended.
