President of the Jamaica Boxing Association, Stephen ‘Bomber’ Jones, is delighted by the upcoming visit of World Boxing President Boris van der Vorst, as he views it as a significant milestone for the sport’s development in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.

Van der Vorst is set to arrive on the island this Saturday, March 29, at Donald Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay for a four-day visit that will conclude on Tuesday, April 2. His itinerary includes observing Jamaica’s boxing talent firsthand at the Jamaica Boxing Board’s gym in Montego Bay, as well as visiting the schools’ programme under development at St. Andrew Technical High School in Kingston.

Jones emphasized the importance of van der Vorst’s visit, especially with boxing now officially included in the 2028 Olympic Games.

"Jamaica will be welcoming the president of World Boxing for the very first time, which is a really big deal. We've been putting in the work, from the grassroots level right up to the elite, and I'm very proud that Jamaica is playing its part in boxing development across the region," Jones said.

He further highlighted the regional goal of making the Caribbean a recognized force in global boxing.

"Having the president here gives us a chance to showcase what we’re building and hopefully get his endorsement before he leaves. We are looking forward to welcoming him and showing him the passion and progress of boxing in Jamaica," Jones added.

During his visit, van der Vorst will also experience key cultural elements of Jamaica, including its renowned cuisine and warm hospitality. Additionally, he will engage in discussions with key stakeholders in the local boxing and sports community to explore opportunities for growth and collaboration.

A seasoned boxing administrator and entrepreneur in the healthcare industry, van der Vorst played a pivotal role in ensuring boxing remained in the Olympic movement. As a founding member and first president of World Boxing in 2023, his leadership continues to drive the sport’s sustainable development.

Recognizing Jamaica’s potential in the boxing world, van der Vorst sees the island as a vital part of the sport’s future in the Caribbean and beyond. His visit is expected to further strengthen efforts to elevate Jamaica’s boxing presence on the global stage.
