Riqui Puig is eyeing more history with the LA Galaxy, believing that their MLS Cup success against the New York Red Bulls is just the beginning.

The Galaxy sealed a record-extending sixth MLS Cup title last week, doing so without Puig in their ranks, with the Spaniard missing the game through injury.

Puig picked up an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in their Western Conference final victory over the Seattle Sounders, having starred for the Galaxy this term.

He registered 31 goal involvements (17 goals, 14 assists) across all competitions, while also creating more chances (70) than any of his team-mates this campaign.

“I think we’re the best team in Major League Soccer,” Puig said Sunday during the club’s championship celebration at Dignity Health Sports Park.

“I think we need more room to add another star here [on the jersey crest], but this doesn’t end here. I think we can make history.”

Since Puig's move to the MLS from Barcelona in August 2022, he has managed 29 goals and 20 assists for the Galaxy in all competitions.

And the Spaniard boldly envisioned earning a place with the statues of club legends David Beckham and Landon Donovan at DHSP’s Legends Plaza.

“I think another statue belongs here,” Puig said, amid chants of “MVP” from the crowd.

"So we have to win a lot more MLS Cups, Concacaf [Champions Cup] and we’re here with this amazing group.”

But Puig was not the only standout player for the Galaxy, with Dejan Joveljic, Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil also impressing for Greg Vanney's side this term.

Brazilian Pec led the MLS in goal involvements (34), while Joveljic (27) and Paintsil (22) also chipped in with some huge contributions.

This has seen speculation surface around their futures with the Galaxy, with reports suggesting the Pec is the subject of interest from sides in the Premier League.

“I hope everybody stays next year because we have a wonderful group,” Puig said.

Seemingly aware of the growing interest in Pec, Puig saved special praise for his teammate who won the 2024 MLS Newcomer of the Year award.

“I need to say this guy, he deserves it,” Puig pointed directly at the Brazilian star. “I think this guy is the real MVP of all the season. Thank God and thanks Gabriel.”
