Goals from Kameron Simmonds and Christina Salmon led Jamaica to a 3-0 victory over Cuba at the Concacaf U20 Women Championships in the Dominican Republic on Monday.
The win gave Jamaica’s junior Reggae Girlz their first win of the competition, rebounding from a 0-1 to Guatemala on Saturday.
Jamaica dominated but was let down by errant passing and poor shooting as they had 35 shots at goal, 12 of them on target. However, they did not get the breakthrough until Kameron Simmonds found the back of the net in the 34th minute, a lead they held at the half-time break.
Simmonds doubled Jamaica’s lead four minutes after the resumption as the Jamaicans took full control of the game, enjoying 62 per cent of the possession.
Substitute Christina Salmon, who replaced Shaniel Buckley in the 72nd minute, added her name to the score sheet shortly thereafter when she put Jamaica up 3-0 in the 81st minute.
The win puts Jamaica atop Group B, at least temporarily, with three points as Guatemala, who defeated Jamaica in their opening match, face Haiti later Monday evening. Both Guatemala and Haiti, who beat Cuba 2-1, also have three points after the first round of matches.
A win for either team would put them atop the group with six points. A draw would see Guatemala and Haiti on four points and drop Jamaica to third in the group.
