Roma were dumped out of the Europa League by Athletic Bilbao, after Mats Hummels was sent off in Thursday's second leg.

Mats Hummels held himself accountable for costing Roma their dream of winning the Europa League after his dismissal against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.

The former Borussia Dortmund centre-back was shown a straight red card for a professional foul on Maroan Sannadi just 11 minutes in at San Mames.

Nico Williams subsequently scored twice, with another goal coming from Yuri Berchiche, as Leandro Paredes' stoppage-time penalty proved a mere consolation in a 3-1 defeat that dumped Roma out 4-3 on aggregate.

Hummels did not hold back his emotions when taking to social media site X, apologising to Roma supporters for his dismissal that turned the tie on its head.

"I am sorry Roma, I want to apologise to our fans and my team-mates," the veteran defender posted.

"I let everyone down today with a mistake that was simply stupid and horrendous.

"These games used to be the games my team could rely on me, now i fu**** up and cost the whole club the dream of winning the Europa League.

"Don‘t know what else to say, I am as disappointed in me like all of you."
