Former Cricket West Indies Media Manager Phillip Spooner was among the honorees at the Annual Sports Awards hosted by the Barbados Olympic Association, where his outstanding contributions to sports media were celebrated. The event, held under the moonlit skies of Barbados, highlighted the achievements of exceptional individuals in the sporting community on the island.
Spooner was recognized for his innovative work in cricket, including the ICC World Cup Trophy Tour, the groundbreaking "Out of this World" campaign, and his role in curating and managing the first-ever Media Hub for an ICC Global event. These efforts have cemented his legacy as a trailblazer in sports media. Reflecting on the recognition, Spooner expressed his gratitude:
"Tonight I give thanks. It was an amazing night under the moonlight in Barbados as I shared the spotlight with other brilliant people in the sports fraternity on this sensational island I again call home. It felt great to be awarded for my work in cricket — even if not by Cricket. As the only honoree from cricket, I will continue to fly the flag for cricket! Kudos and thanks again to the good folks over at The Barbados Olympic Association Inc."
The night also saw Olympic 400m finalist Sada Williams emerge as one of the top winners. Williams, who represented Barbados with distinction at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, was named Senior Female Athlete of the Year and received the prestigious President’s Award for her remarkable performances on the international stage.
Adding to the evening’s highlights, Anmar Goodridge Boyce was recognized as Journalist of the Year for his exceptional coverage of the Paris Olympics, showcasing the critical role of media in bringing sports stories to life.
The Annual Sports Awards celebrated a blend of athletic excellence and contributions to sports media, with Spooner’s recognition standing out as a testament to the vital behind-the-scenes work that drives the sporting world forward. It was a night of pride and reflection for all those who have dedicated their lives to sports in Barbados.
