The much-anticipated West Indies Championship clash between Guyana Harpy Eagles and Windward Islands Volcanoes got off to a frustrating start on Wednesday as only 27 overs were possible on a rain-affected opening day at Providence Stadium.
After a delayed start due to morning showers, the Volcanoes, who won the toss and chose to bat, reached 77 for 2 before rain once again intervened and forced an early end to proceedings. When play resumes on Thursday—weather permitting—Jeremy Solozano will continue unbeaten on 43, alongside Alick Athanaze on nine.
The day began on a shaky note for the Volcanoes as opener Stephan Pascal fell without scoring, bowled by off-spinner Kevin Sinclair in just the fourth over. The early breakthrough brought Solozano and Kavem Hodge to the crease, and the pair slowly rebuilt as they added 49 runs for the second wicket.
Hodge looked steady, reaching 17 before he feathered an edge off seamer Ronaldo Alimohamed to wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach with the score at 57 for 2. Solozano, however, remained watchful and anchored the innings with his patient knock, while Athanaze joined him to navigate the remainder of the session.
Just as the pair looked set to form a promising partnership, the heavens opened again, which brought play to a premature close. With the weather forecast still uncertain for the rest of the match, both teams will be hoping for clearer skies on day two to make up for lost time.
