Jamaican all-rounder Rovman Powell delivered a match-winning performance as the Dubai Capitals claimed the 2025 ILT20 title with a thrilling four-wicket victory over the Desert Vipers in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Powell’s crucial 63 off 38 balls earned him the Player of the Match award, guiding the Capitals to their maiden championship triumph.
Chasing a target of 190, the Capitals found themselves in early trouble at 31-3 after just five overs. Shai Hope, who played a composed innings of 43 off 39 balls, provided some stability, but it was Powell who changed the course of the game with his explosive knock. His innings featured seven fours and three sixes, striking at a blistering 165.78.
With the required run rate climbing, Powell launched an aggressive counter-attack, taking on the Desert Vipers’ bowlers and turning the game in his team’s favour. He found a reliable partner in Dasun Shanaka (21 off 10 balls), and the duo added 41 runs in quick time before Powell was dismissed in the 18th over.
With 38 runs still needed off the final 18 deliveries, Sikandar Raza (34 not out off 12 balls) played a blinder, smashing five boundaries and a six to seal the victory with four balls to spare. The Capitals finished on 191-6 in 19.2 overs, securing a well-deserved title.
Sikander Raza celebrating Capitals win. He smashed a quick-fire 34 to seal victory.
Earlier, the Desert Vipers posted 189-5 in their 20 overs, thanks to a brilliant 76 off 51 balls from Max Holden and an unbeaten 62 off 33 balls from captain Sam Curran. The Vipers looked set for a massive total, but key wickets in the middle overs restricted their momentum.
Obed McCoy and Haider Ali provided crucial breakthroughs for the Capitals, with McCoy finishing with 2-44 in his four-over spell.
Powell’s heroics ensured the Capitals lifted their first-ever ILT20 trophy, capping off a dominant campaign. His outstanding form and leadership under pressure were instrumental in Dubai’s successful run in the tournament.
