Christania Williams’ coach Phillip Unfried believes her stint in bobsled will benefit her performance on the track in the 2025 outdoor season.

Earlier today, Sportsmax.tv reported that Williams would be pushing the 2-woman bobsleigh for Austrian 2021 Overall World Cup Champion and former Junior World Champion pilot Katrin Beierl at the IBSF World Cup in Innsbruck-Igls this weekend on January 18 and 19.

Williams currently trains under Unfried at the sports centre in St. Pölten in Lower Austria and the connection between her and Beierl was established because Beierl, a two-time European bronze medallist, also trains there in the summer.

A conversation with Unfried provided further clarification on why the 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medallist is trying her hand at the famed winter sport.

“She is pushing the sled because the Austrians were looking for a really fast brake-woman and so she’s here training and accelerating well and we were like let’s try for winters instead of indoor season because it might be very beneficial for her sprinting,” Unfried told Sportsmax.tv on Thursday.

He noted that her work as a brake-woman can be a substitute for all the resistance work sprinters do to be explosive out the blocks in short sprint races.

“In sprinting you work a lot with resistance stuff so it was like a different idea and there were already different athletes in Europe who responded really well with that and turned out that she did really well,” he said.

“The idea for now is to go the bobsled a few races this winter then the plan will still be to race and do track and field outdoors,” he added.
