The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has a new leader, with Sheryl Hermonstine securing the presidency following a contentious election at the association's Annual General Meeting on Sunday at the National Racquet Centre in Georgetown.

Hermonstine, who previously served as First Vice President under outgoing President Aubrey Hutson, won the presidency with five votes, defeating Dr. Ariane Mangar, who secured only one. However, the election process was overshadowed by controversy, as multiple clubs abstained from voting, and Hutson himself walked out of the meeting before the election, alleging constitutional breaches.

Hutson, who had been nominated for re-election, opted not to contest, raising concerns about the integrity of the voting process. His departure, coupled with the decision of several clubs to boycott the election, highlighted ongoing tensions within the AAG.

Despite the turbulence, Hermonstine takes over at a crucial time for athletics in Guyana. She had already stepped in as acting president in 2023 following Hutson’s suspension after the CARIFTA Games debacle and is now expected to bring stability and reform to the organization.

Joining her on the executive committee are Mark Scott as First Vice President, Mayfield Taylor-Trim as Second Vice President, Dwayne Carter as Treasurer, and Niall Stanton as Assistant Treasurer. The committee members include Dr. Ariane Mangar, Thelson Williams, Tyrone Smith, Osafo Dos Santos, and Towanna McAlmont. James Cole was re-appointed as General Secretary, while Kenisha Headley will serve as Assistant General Secretary.

Attorney-at-Law Emily Dodson served as the Returning Officer for the elections, which followed a period of public disputes that exposed the challenges in track and field governance in Guyana.

Hermonstine’s election marks a turning point for the AAG, as she looks to unify the fractured association and steer the sport forward. With Guyana’s track and field prospects on the rise, her leadership will be closely watched as she works to restore confidence and stability in the organization.
