The Fantastic Warriors, last year’s runners-up in the KPMG Squash League, were upbeat about their chances this year after winning their first two matches of the tournament comprehensively.
They are gearing up to get their first hold of the coveted trophy but will have to clear a couple of hurdles to stay on course for the big prize.
They recorded a straight sets 3-0 win over the Avengers recently to book their place in the quarter-final.
That match saw captain Stewart Maxwell defeating Ethan Williams 21/14, 21/15, 21/17; Nabeel Jawad defeating Aqueme Johnson 21/17, 21/16, 21/15 and Yasir Anwad beating Varenya Singh 21/14, 21/13, 21/19.
Maxwell was confident of his team’s ability to go all the way.
“Once you’re in a competition that is the goal so I would say yes, I believe we have a chance,” he said before crediting the team’s fitness for their on-court performance to date.
“Fitness is coming. All our guys are working hard, preparing, both individually and when we have time we hit together and we do our own fitness training.”
A look at the results for the other matches in the round show that Swift Swingers blanked Racket Science 3-0; Saints defeated the Juniors 3-0 as well and first-time entrant KPMG Squash Rascals winning their first game in the league but lost one game to two against the Racketeers.
The final set of matches in the preliminary round will be played on Tuesday at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston with matches staring at 6:00 pm.
The KPMG team will be on court to face the Campionites. Both teams will be looking for their first win of a match outright in the league. The Campionites team are also first-time entrants in the league.
The Jamaica Squash Association (JSA) and KPMG joined forces for the 25th time to stage the long-running squash league which will end on April 4.
