Jamaican sprinter Shaquena Foote continues to cement her place in San Diego State University’s track and field history, breaking her own indoor 400m school record for the fourth time at the Don Kirby Invitational in New Mexico on Saturday.
Foote, a native of Westmoreland, Jamaica, clocked 52.42 seconds, narrowly improving her previous record by 0.01 seconds. The performance saw her finish fourth overall in the invitational 400m dash, won by BYU’s Sami Oblad (51.71 seconds).
Foote initially set the school record on January 20, 2023, and since then, she has shattered it four times, each time raising the bar for future San Diego State athletes. Her latest record-breaking run reaffirms her status as one of the best 400m runners in program history.
With multiple Mountain West Conference titles and USTFCCCA Honorable Mentions already to her name, Foote’s continued progress suggests she is on the path to bigger achievements in the NCAA and beyond.
Her impressive resume includes:
2024 Mountain West Indoor & Outdoor Champion (400m, 4x100m, 4x400m)
5x Mountain West Indoor Track Athlete of the Week (Most recently: 1/13/25)
2023 & 2024 Mountain West Outdoor Champion (400m, 4x100m, 4x400m)
Top-three all-time San Diego State performances in the 200m, 400m, 600m, and 4x400m relay
Foote’s consistent dominance at the conference level and her ability to rewrite history almost every time she steps on the track indicate that there is still more to come from the talented Jamaican sprinter.
As the indoor season progresses and the outdoor season approaches, Foote will be looking to continue her record-breaking streak and position herself among the top collegiate quarter-milers in the nation.
