Jamaica's middle-distance charge found top gear at the Mt SAC Relays on Saturday, as Rivaldo Marshall and Tyrice Taylor produced a commanding 1-2 finish in the men's 800m, while Briana Williams and Rushana Dwyer also secured podium finishes in the sprints.
Marshall, a standout at the University of Arkansas, continued his impressive season with a personal best 1:45.59 to win the 800m in heat three, narrowly edging his Razorbacks teammate Tyrice Taylor, who clocked 1:45.81 for second. Their strong finish held off Nike’s Craig Engels, who took third in 1:46.00.
Meanwhile, in the women’s 100m, Olympic relay gold medallist Briana Williams battled a -1.3 m/s headwind to finish third in a competitive final. Williams, representing Jamaica and Nike, clocked 11.43 behind Dajaz Defrand of USC and Destiny Smith-Barnett of DoublePillarAthletics, who both crossed the line in 11.35, with Defrand getting the nod on thousandths of a second.
In the women’s 400m, Jamaica’s Rushana Dwyer, now representing South Florida, delivered a strong performance to place third overall. Competing in heat two, she clocked 52.66 to secure a podium finish behind Lauren Tolbert of Duke (51.72) and BYU’s Sami Oblad (51.79), who went 1-2 in heat three.
The Jamaican contingent’s performances added to a strong showing for Caribbean athletes at one of the premier track meets on the U.S. collegiate and professional calendar.
