KC’s Despiro Wray, STETHS’ Rickoy Hunter strike gold at Penn Relays

Kingston College’s Despiro Wray and St Elizabeth Technical’s Rickoy Hunter delivered standout performances to claim field event titles on Thursday’s opening day of the 129th Penn Relays at Franklin Field.

Wray continued his golden run this season by securing the boys’ shot put crown with a commanding throw of 20.87m — the 10th best mark in Penn Relays history. The in-form thrower, who recently captured the Class One title at Champs and the Under-20 crown at the Carifta Games, led a clean Jamaican sweep of the podium.

Munro College’s Devonte Edwards earned silver with 19.78m, while Cornwall College’s Mar-Lando Farquharson rounded out the top three with a 19.67m effort.

Over in the sandpit, Hunter emerged victorious in a fiercely contested long jump final. The STETHS standout soared to 7.30m on his fifth attempt, after cutting the sand at 7.26m and 7.29m in earlier rounds. His winning leap led a Caribbean top three, as Calabar’s Romaine Lewis claimed silver with his opening mark of 7.22m.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Tyrique Vincent of Fatima College snatched bronze with a dramatic final attempt of 7.12m, narrowly edging out Bahamian Davon Davis (7.08m) of Queen’s College, who had momentarily held third.

Meanwhile, in the discus circle, Jamaica College’s Joseph Salmon grabbed silver with a solid 61.64m throw. Calabar’s Kamari Kennedy placed fifth with 59.32m in the highly competitive field, which was topped by American favorite Ashton Hearn of Christian Brothers High, who unleashed a winning throw of 64.30m.

St Catherine High’s Rajay Hemmings (54.92m) and Kingston College’s Daijon Budhai (52.81m) also featured in the top 12.
