The Girls’ 400m at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships is shaping up to live up to expectations, as the medal favourites cruised into their respective finals after Wednesday morning’s semi-final rounds at the National Stadium.
Defending Class One champion Abigail Campbell of Hydel High once again stamped her authority as she eased across the line in a controlled 53.30 seconds, the fastest time of the semi-finals, and sent a strong message to her rivals. Campbell, who has been in sublime form this season, is poised to defend her crown, but she will have her hands full with a talented field.
Edwin Allen’s Kellyann Carr clocked 53.94 seconds to secure her place in the final, as she also looked smooth and composed as she conserved energy for the medal race. Holmwood Technical’s Abrina Wright (54.24s) also advanced, while Vere Technical’s Shevaughn Thomas, who clocked 54.91 seconds, will be hoping for a sharper run in the final as she chases a podium finish.
In Class Two, Hydel’s Nastassia Fletcher looks ready to make a major statement. After finishing third last year, Fletcher is on a mission to upgrade her bronze to gold, and, by all indications, it will take a smart performance to deny her on Thursday. She powered to a personal best of 53.08 seconds — the fastest time in the class this season.
However, her teammate Sashana Johnson, who clocked a solid 53.97 seconds, also seems set to fire on all cylinders, along with Alphansus Davis High’s Shanika Lindsay (54.85s) and Vere Technical’s Jesena Williams (55.03 s), who also secured spots in the final.
Meanwhile, in Class Three, Foga Road High’s Shameika McLean continued her remarkable campaign, storming to 54.79 seconds and once again asserting herself as the one to beat. McLean’s run not only secured her place in the final but also kept Foga Road’s hopes of a historic gold medal alive.
Joining her will be St Jago’s Jamilia Alves, who clocked 56.22 seconds, while Holmwood Technical secured two finalists in Ashley Wynter (57.37s) and Tracey-Ann Evans (55.55s).
The 400m finals are scheduled for Thursday evening.
