Sportsmax.TV sources have revealed that Class 1 100m gold medallist Gary Card is likely to miss the 200m heats at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Championships, after sustaining a quadriceps strain during his winning run on Wednesday night.
Card, representing Wolmer’s Boys’ School, had electrified the stadium earlier in the day with a blistering personal best of 10.06 seconds in the semi-finals. However, in the final just hours later, he appeared to suffer an injury mid-race but bravely powered through to claim victory in 10.28 seconds.
Despite visibly tightening up during the final 40 metres, Card held on for gold, edging out Tyrece Foreman, who was second in 10.29 and Excelsior’s Malik Nugent, who finished third in 10.35.
Initial assessments, according to sources, confirmed that Card suffered a mild strain to his quadriceps. Though he was later seen walking around with minimal discomfort, medical staff are expected to take a cautious approach, meaning his participation in Thursday’s 200m heats is highly unlikely.
Card’s withdrawal would be a major blow to both Wolmer’s and fans hoping to see a potential sprint double from the rising star, whose semi-final performance was one of the highlights of the championships so far.
While no official confirmation has yet been provided regarding his status for the rest of the meet, it’s expected that Card and his coaching team will prioritize recovery and long-term fitness over further risk at Champs 2025.
