The ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has extended heartfelt condolences to the family of sprint legend Usain Bolt following the passing of his father, Wellesley Bolt, who died after a prolonged illness.
In an official statement released on Monday, the JLP expressed sympathy to Jennifer Bolt, Usain, and the entire Bolt family, noting Wellesley’s role not only as a devoted father but as a respected businessman and community figure in Sherwood Content, Trelawny, where Usain Bolt was born and raised.
“Wellesley Bolt was a well-known businessman in the community of Sherwood Content, who played an influential role in moulding Usain, one of Jamaica’s finest sons who has gone on to make our country proud on the world stage,” the statement read.
JLP Chairman Robert Montague acknowledged the nation’s collective grief at the news, stating, “To Usain and his family we extend our heartfelt condolences. We pray that the sting of death is significantly reduced over time. We are confident that the great architect of the universe, Almighty God, will provide the entire Bolt family with solace in this their time of bereavement.”
Montague added that the JLP was offering special prayers for Jennifer Bolt, who has lost her husband and life partner.
He also praised Wellesley for his quiet but meaningful contribution to community development and his pivotal role in shaping the values and character of Jamaica’s most iconic athlete.
“Wellesley departed this world knowing that in Usain, he produced a legendary Jamaican ambassador who continues to show that greatness is characterized by discipline, perseverance, humility, and excellence — attributes Usain no doubt obtained in part from his late father.”
The JLP joins a growing list of individuals and organizations both locally and internationally who have expressed condolences and support for the Bolt family at this difficult time.
