The Elevation Cycling Club (ECC) has received a crucial financial injection from the National Commercial Bank (NCB), providing a much-needed boost as the team prepares for the upcoming Jamaica International Cycling Classic in Montego Bay this April.
Widely recognized as one of Jamaica’s top cycling clubs, the Old Harbour-based ECC is set to compete against some of the best cyclists from the Americas at the prestigious event, scheduled for April 3-6. However, with a budget exceeding J$2 million, the club has been actively seeking corporate sponsorship to help cover the costs associated with travel, accommodation, and competition expenses.
NCB, through its Old Harbour branch, answered the call with an undisclosed donation to support the team’s participation. Shelly Allen, NCB Old Harbour’s branch manager, emphasized the bank’s commitment to community development, noting that the decision to support ECC was driven by their dedication to nurturing local talent.
“We have always been supportive of the community through various initiatives. After learning more about the cycling club and their goals, we felt compelled to contribute,” Allen stated.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the club, ECC Vice President Alton Duhaney expressed his deep appreciation for the support.
“We are extremely appreciative of your contribution and will do our very best to make our community, donors, and sponsors proud,” Duhaney said.
Meanwhile, ECC President Velana Creary continues to work behind the scenes to ensure the team is fully prepared for the competition. She also took the opportunity to encourage other corporate entities to support the club’s efforts.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for your brand to gain visibility. The event will be televised on one of the region’s largest cable networks, and we are offering the chance to feature your brand on our team jerseys for a small cost. However, time is of the essence as the jerseys are being produced overseas,” Creary explained.
She added that the club welcomes any level of support, reinforcing the Jamaican adage, “Every mickle mek a muckle” – meaning that every little bit counts.
Since its establishment in 2021, the ECC has already made a significant impact on Jamaican cycling, producing two national champions: Jerome Forrest in the senior category and Jaequan Dixon in the junior division. Dixon, who recently turned 18 and transitioned to the senior ranks, is widely regarded as the future of Jamaican cycling.
With the backing of NCB and the potential for additional sponsorships, the ECC is well-positioned to represent Jamaica with pride and determination at the Jamaica International Cycling Classic. As they prepare for the high-stakes event, the club remains hopeful that more partners will come on board to support their journey to success.
