Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz head coach Hubert Busby Jr has declared that all objectives were met in the team’s 2-0 victory over Peru in Lima on Sunday. While pleased with the result and the opportunity to rotate the squad, Busby emphasized the need for improvements in front of goal as the team was wasteful with their chances.
Busby acknowledged the challenge posed by Peru, noting the strong home support and the intensity of the contest. “It was really good to come out into the stadium and have the support that they had for the game. Credit to the Peruvian people and credit to the fans for coming out,” Busby said.
Jamaica struggled in the first half but showed improvement after the break. “I think the most important thing for us is that not only did we get the result in the end, but we were also able to adjust and manage the game a lot better. I thought we didn't necessarily do that in the first half, and I think the second half was a lot better,” Busby added.
The match also provided an opportunity for young players to gain valuable international experience. Nyema Ingleton and Reanna Blades were among those making their Reggae Girlz debuts, an aspect Busby saw as a crucial step in squad development. “What was really promising was the fact that we were able to make a lot of subs, get a lot of young players, in some cases their debut, for them to come on and really experience what it's like to play international football in these environments,” he noted.
While happy with the overall performance, Busby pointed out that the game could have been won by a larger margin had the team been more clinical. “Goals change games, and the reality is, I think, if we put away some of our chances, the game would have been a lot different. Credit to Peru for staying in it, but for us, not putting away those chances forced us to manage the game better in the second half and control it the way we wanted to.”
He emphasized the importance of working on finishing as the team moves forward. “We’ll work on some finishing, but overall, I was glad that we were able to create the chances. Now, we just have to put them away,” Busby said.
The Reggae Girlz will take on Peru again on Wednesday in the second of their two-match friendly series. With the team preparing for upcoming World Cup qualifiers, Busby believes these matches are valuable in building resilience and refining their play. “At the end of the day, it's about us getting a result and finding a way to get a result. When you come to environments like this, it’s what we're preparing for when it comes to potential World Cup qualifiers on the horizon.”
The Reggae Girlz will aim to extend their winning streak and, more importantly, sharpen their attacking edge in the rematch against Peru on Wednesday.
