Minister of Sport Olivia "Babsy" Grange announced a $500,000 allocation to each parish football association in Jamaica in a move that not only highlights the spirit of Christmas giving but also reaffirms her government’s commitment to bolstering the development of football at all levels.

The announcement came during the launch of the Argentine-Caribbean Youth Football: Training of Trainers Programme at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming youth football across the region.

Grange pointed out that the financial pledge to the parish football associations, which amounts to $7 million, is aimed at strengthening grassroots football, with a particular focus on coaching programmes for under-13 and under-15 age groups.

Though she acknowledged the budgetary constraints faced by her ministry, Grange said the decision was a necessary and decisive move given the current state of the associations.

“The associations are underfunded, and while they do receive some support, I felt that the government must play its part. So this initial $500,000 allocation to each association will focus on youth coaching programmes and grassroots initiatives. We are putting our money where our mouth is,” she declared.

Grange also highlighted the importance of accountability in the use of the funds as she explained that proper management would strengthen the case for additional support in the future.

That said, Grange welcomed the collaborative effort between Jamaica and Argentina for the Training of the Trainers Programme, which she described as a milestone in the Caribbean’s commitment to youth development and sports excellence.

The initiative, she said, would unite communities, break down barriers, and provide opportunities for young people from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

“This programme is not just about football. It is about building a brighter future for youth through innovative coaching techniques and a focus on both technical skills and personal development. By investing in our youth coaches, we are investing in the future of our communities and our nation,” Grange said as she addressed an audience that included Argentina’s ambassador to Jamaica, Marcelo Balbi Calvo, representatives from the FOAR, and the Jamaica Football Federation.

Facilitated by the Argentine Fund for International Cooperation (FOAR) and the Organization of American States (OAS), the initiative is part of Argentina’s broader international cooperation strategy and underscores the shared values between Argentina and the Caribbean, bridging geographic divides with a common love for the sport.

The project to include 10 Caribbean countries—Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago—will be executed in two phases.

An eight-week virtual theoretical training session is scheduled for February 2025 and will focus on coaching methodologies, sports psychology, and the integration of technology in training.

On that note, Grange commended youth coaches that will participate in the programme, as she reminded those at the launch about the critical role they play in shaping the future of Caribbean football.

“You are the role models and mentors who will shape the future of Caribbean football. Take full advantage of this opportunity to learn, grow, and bring back the knowledge and skills to your respective communities,” she reasoned.

Finally, the minister expressed gratitude to Argentina for their partnership, which underscores the mutual respect and cooperation that have driven the initiative.

“This initiative embodies the spirit of cooperation between our nations. It is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together towards a common goal. So let us continue to support and uplift our youth through the beautiful game of football,” Grange ended.
