Antigua and Barbuda’s Women’s Football team or the “Benna Girls” as they are often called, are champions of the Women’s Leeward Islands Challenge Series after claiming a penalty-shootout victory over hosts Anguilla after playing to a 1-1 stalemate at the Raymond E. G. Guishard Technical Center on Saturday.
The Antiguans opened the scoring just 15 minutes into the contest through in-form Gabrielle De Suza.
That strike looked to be enough until Coleen Johnson equalized for Anguilla nine minutes from full time.
With no team being able to score the decisive goal in regular time, a penalty shootout was necessary to decide a champion.
The visitors showed exceptional composure with Jada Benjamin, De Suza, Zolique Samuel, and Virginia Simon all successfully converting their penalties.
In contrast, Anguilla struggled from the spot, with only Adaiah Linton managing to score from their four attempts.
At the tournament’s conclusion, De Suza was awarded the Most Valuable Player and Most Goals Awards, while fellow teammates Captain Anik Jarvis and Jada Benjamin won the Best Goalkeeper and Defender Awards, respectively.
