The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to social responsibility and national development by announcing a J$500,000 upfront donation to Jamaica’s Special Olympians ahead of the Melbourne Cricket Club/Pure Water 5K Run/Walk set for March 9, 2025.
At the event’s launch on Wednesday at Melbourne Cricket Club’s grounds in Kingston, club president Mark Neita declared that, instead of waiting until after the event to present the donation, Melbourne would immediately provide financial support to the Special Olympics team as they continue preparations for the 2025 Special Winter Olympics Games set for Italy in March.
"This year, as the Special Olympics team journeys to Italy to take on the world and shine once again, we are hoping that from this event we'll be able to make another significant contribution to their success," Neita said.
"As a matter of fact, we have undertaken a leap of faith by confirming today that we will make a presentation to the Special Olympics even before the event starts on March 9. We will be making a contribution, and I can tell you today, that contribution will be no less than J$500,000 from this event."
Over the years, Melbourne Cricket Club has raised millions for various charitable causes, contributing J$1.5 million to Special Olympics Jamaica, over J$500,000 to the Sickle Cell Foundation, and another J$500,000 to other charitable initiatives. Neita said this unwavering commitment speaks to Melbourne’s culture of community involvement and a belief in the power of sports to change lives.
"If you think about the dynamics of a curriculum for us to be contributing, that speaks volumes of what we do here at Melbourne and the fact that we take our social responsibility very, very seriously," he said.
Neita encouraged the public to support the Melbourne/Pure Water 5K, emphasizing that the event is not just about running—it is a fun-filled, family-oriented experience that blends fitness with community impact.
"Those who have come to our 5Ks before will know that it's a wonderful family experience. And we will once again be upholding that tradition of having a children's village," he noted.
Participants are also being encouraged to embrace the cricket theme, with prizes being awarded for those who show up in the most "funky, cricket funky" attire. Sponsors will also be on hand to provide refreshments, giveaways, and interactive experiences, further enhancing the event’s vibrant atmosphere.
"Those who have come to this event know that it's a wonderful family atmosphere that we create for all to enjoy," Neita added.
Neita thanked the event’s sponsors for their continued support, emphasizing that their contributions make it possible for MCC to stage the 5K and, in turn, give back to the community in meaningful ways.
With a history of service and a mission to uplift Jamaican athletes, the Melbourne Cricket Club/Pure Water 5K Run/Walk continues to make a lasting impact—this time, ensuring that Jamaica’s Special Olympians have the support they need as they prepare to represent the nation on the world stage.
