Dundee United returned to the top of the cinch Championship by beating Ayr 1-0 at Tannadice.

Kai Fotheringham fired home his 10th goal of the season after 63 minutes to take United above Raith, who were 4-3 winners over Partick Thistle on Friday.

Ayr went close to opening the scoring after 13 minutes when Fraser Bryden’s effort was cleared off the line by Kevin Holt.

Fotheringham missed two scoring opportunities, both set up by Glenn Middleton, before pouncing on a loose ball after Ayr had failed to clear a corner.

Raith fought back to edge a seven-goal cinch Championship thriller at home to Partick Thistle to move top of the table after extending their unbeaten league run to eight matches following a topsy-turvy 4-3 win.

November signing Daniel O’Reilly headed Sam Stanton’s cross home following a corner for his first goal for the club after 13 minutes but the next six goals were to come after the break.

Dylan Easton doubled Rovers’ lead at the start of the second half as he picked out the bottom corner but an own goal from O’Reilly reduced the deficit as he got the last touch on Kerr McInroy’s free-kick.

Brian Graham fired home a penalty to put the visitors level just before the hour mark and Blair Alston put the Jags ahead for the first time as he slotted the ball home at the far post 10 minutes later.

But Raith were not done yet and they scored two goals in quick succession as first, Callum Smith’s curling effort found the bottom corner, while Stanton fired Smith’s assist home with eight minutes remaining to clinch maximum points.

Partick stretched their unbeaten Scottish Championship run to five matches with a 2-1 victory at home to Airdrieonians.

Ricco Diack got Partick off to an ideal start as he opened the scoring after just seven minutes, rising highest to head in from a corner.

The 18-year-old threatened again as he glanced an effort past the post after 32 minutes and his involvement forced the second five minutes later.

Aidan Fitzpatrick’s cross towards the striker resulted in Callum Fordyce knocking the ball into his own net.

Craig Watson pulled one back for the visitors nine minutes after half-time, latching on to Calum Gallagher’s cushioned header before firing home.

Jamie Gullan’s penalty four mintues into time added on earned Raith a come-from-behind 2-1 win at Inverness.

The home side had led thanks to Billy Mckay’s goal just after the hour, but Lewis Vaughan’s late equaliser and Gullan’s even later penalty turned things around.

Caley went ahead when Mckay met David Wotherspoon’s 61st-minute cross with a terrific header.

But the visitors hit back four minutes from time when Vaughan flicked the ball over a defender and finished.

And there was still time for Gullan to win it from the spot, with the home side having no chance to respond.

Craig Wighton’s double helped Dunfermline ease past managerless Arbroath.

The hosts cruised to a 3-0 lead to move up to fourth in the cinch Championship on Tuesday.

Josh Edwards opened the scoring three minutes after the break when he followed up from a tight angle.

Wighton added a second with 17 minutes left before wrapping up the points from close range in stoppage time.

Lewis McCann rescued a point for Dunfermline as Duncan Ferguson maintained his unbeaten record as Inverness boss in a 1-1 draw.

The former Everton striker is yet to lose after six games in charge despite seeing victory slip away late on.

Danny Devine gave the visitors the lead two minutes before the break when he fired in from inside the box.

But McCann levelled for the hosts with three minutes left when his strike went in off the post.

David Wotherspoon scored twice as in-form Inverness moved out of the Scottish Championship relegation spots with a 3-1 win over play-off chasing Ayr.

Wotherspoon opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a close-range finish after Nathan Shaw’s effort fell into his path.

The forward added a second 11 minutes later with a deflected effort, taking his goal tally to three in as many games, before Billy McKay converted from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time after Charlie Gilmour was fouled in the box by Paddy Reading.

Ayr pulled a goal back in the 60th minute courtesy of Jamie Murphy’s penalty following a foul on Ahkeem Rose, but could not prevent Inverness from extending their unbeaten run to five matches.

Ross Millen came back to haunt former club Queen’s Park with a late winner as 10-man Raith edged a topsy-turvy 3-2 Scottish Championship match at Hampden Park.

Lewis Vaughan broke the deadlock for the visitors six minutes before the break as he slotted Aidan Connolly’s assist into the bottom corner.

Just after the hour mark, Euan Murray was sent off for Raith for a foul on Ruari Paton.

With 20 minutes remaining, Queen’s Park made their advantage count as they equalised through Jack Turner’s fifth goal of the season in all competitions and – four minutes later – the hosts turned things around thanks to Paton’s close-range strike.

But Raith hit back with two late goals from Jack Hamilton and former Spiders defender Millen to steal maximum points.

Airdrie secured a first Scottish Championship win in six matches with a 2-0 victory at home to Arbroath.

The Diamonds took the lead after 19 minutes when Liam McStravick slotted home the loose ball after Nikolay Todorov’s shot had been saved by Derek Gaston.

The Arbroath goalkeeper pulled off a superb save to keep out a Todorov header in the 35th minute and Adam Frizzell was inches away from a second on the hour.

Lewis McGregor did make it two for the Diamonds with 11 minutes remaining when Calum Gallagher threaded the ball through for the midfielder to coolly slot past the keeper.

Partick Thistle condemned basement club Morton to their third straight cinch Championship defeat after edging to a 2-1 victory at Firhill Stadium.

The hosts got off to a rapid start when Kerr McInroy fired in from the edge of the area in the third minute.

Morton were level in the 32nd minute through Grant Gillespie’s spot-kick after former Scotland international Kirk Broadfoot was felled in the penalty area.

Veteran Thistle striker Brian Graham, who was already on yellow card when he was substituted off in the 72nd minute, was dismissed two minutes later despite not being on the field.

But the home side claimed all three points through Blair Alston’s strike with 13 minutes remaining to secure successive league wins.

Chris Mochrie’s late winner gave Dundee United a 2-1 victory at Dunfermline to move them seven points clear at the top of the cinch Championship.

United took the lead when Kai Fotheringham headed home the rebound after Deniz Mehmet could not hold Liam Grimshaw’s fierce strike.

Owen Moffat brought the Pars level when he slotted home after a quick counter-attack shortly after the restart.

But Mochrie ensured the points were going home with the visitors when he made space and smashed home into the corner in the 85th minute.

Ruari Paton’s leveller deep in stoppage time rescued a point as Queen’s Park snatched a 2-2 draw at Ayr.

Anton Dowds’s double had given the hosts a 2-0 lead in the first half to put them in control.

Alex Bannon pulled a goal back when he headed in Jack Spong’s corner after 58 minutes.

Then, in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Paton finished from close range to level.

Partick Thistle cemented their place in the Scottish Championship top four with a 3-1 win at Arbroath.

Aidan Fitzpatrick’s brace and Brian Graham’s goal ensured the visitors remain third in the table.

Stevie Lawless had a penalty saved six minutes after the break and Harry Milne also had a goal disallowed.

Jermaine Hylton scored a consolation with three minutes left and the hosts stay in eighth.

Nikolay Todorov rescued a 1-1 draw for Airdrie at Raith, who missed the chance to close the gap on Scottish Championship leaders Dundee United.

The visitors started well and Charlie Telfer’s header was well saved by Raith goalkeeper Maciej Dabrowski before Todorov saw his volley clatter against the bar midway through the half.

Raith, who had gone close through Sam Stanton, went ahead a minute before half-time when Callum Smith collected the ball from Scott Brown and laced beyond the helpless Joshua Rae and into the top corner.

But Airdrie were level after 55 minutes as Todorov rose highest to head home Adam Frizzell’s corner to deny Raith, who remain four points behind Dundee United after the Tangerines drew against Inverness.

Kevin Holt’s header extended Dundee United’s unbeaten start to the Scottish Championship season to a dozen matches but the league leaders were held to a 1-1 draw by Inverness.

The Tangerines had scored 15 and conceded none in racking up four successive wins but Caley Thistle came close to opening the scoring in the first half as Jack Walton denied Billy McKay from close range.

Holt was denied by a fantastic save from Mark Ridgers at the other end before Inverness took a 50th-minute lead as Cameron Harper’s cross was converted by Nathan Shaw, who fired low beyond Walton.

The hosts were level within six minutes as Holt rose highest to powerfully head home Kai Fotheringham’s floated corner, but they were unable to find a winner as the sides shared the spoils.
