Alexander Zverev went clear for the most ATP Masters 1000 victories since the start of 2020 with Monday's straight-sets win over Jordan Thompson at the Miami Open.
Zverev entered his fourth-round clash with the Australian having won 80 matches at ATP Masters 1000 events since 2020, level with Stefanos Tsitsipas.
A day after Tsitsipas was dumped out of the Florida event by Sebastian Korda, Zverev shook off a slow start to beat Thompson 7-5 6-4 in just under an hour and a half.
Thompson raised hopes of an upset by racing to a 3-0 lead in the opening set, with Zverev making a series of uncharacteristic errors. But once the German found his range, he was scarcely troubled on his own serve and he broke back in the seventh game.
Zverev let out a huge roar after a sublime drop volley in the 11th game helped him break again, and he saw it out serenely on his own serve to take the opener.
The second set was a totally different story, with Zverev breaking instantly. From then on, he only gave up four points on his own serve, earning just his second set of back-to-back wins since he lost the Australian Open final in January.
Frances Tiafoe or Arthur Fils will be his opponent in the fourth round, as he seeks a 24th ATP career title.
Data Debrief: Zverev into last 16 again
Zverev is now the most successful player at Masters 1000 events over the last five years, in terms of victories, and he is not far off claiming another format record.
Among players born since 1990, Zverev (47) only trails Grigor Dimitrov (48) for rounds of 16 reached at Masters 1000 events.
