A heartwarming moment at a recent Sunshine Girls netball match has led to a generous act of support from sprint legend and former 100m world record holder, Asafa Powell. A student from Camperdown High School approached Powell seeking assistance for her upcoming participation in the 2025 Florida Netball Classic, set for April 19-20 in Florida.
Moved by the request, Powell wasted no time in stepping up. He donated JMD$450,000 to cover travel expenses for three Camperdown netballers—Mahalia Mills, Lasana Cooper, and Rihanna Lewis—ensuring they have the opportunity to compete on the international stage. In addition to the financial support, the players also received brand-new sneakers, courtesy of Powell’s longtime sponsors, Puma.
The donation was made possible through the Sagicor Foundation, where the official cheque handover took place on Friday.
Troy Yorke, Camperdown’s team manager and assistant bursar, expressed immense gratitude for Powell’s generosity. "This means so much to us. These girls love netball, and Asafa’s generosity will allow them to compete. His support not only gets them to Florida but also inspires them to keep pushing for excellence."
Camperdown High School has been a regular competitor at the Florida Netball Classics for over a decade, securing the Under-19 title in 2015. This contribution ensures the school continues its tradition of representing Jamaica on the international stage.
Powell, known as the sub-10 king for his record number of sub-10 second 100m performances, reflected on why giving back to young athletes is so important to him.
"I was raised to be a people person, and I’m blessed to be in a position where I can give back. As an athlete, I know how hard it is to reach the top, so seeing the smiles on their faces and knowing they have this opportunity makes me just as happy."
Powell’s contribution not only underscores his continued impact in the sporting world but also highlights his dedication to uplifting young Jamaican athletes. His generosity will give these netballers a chance to showcase their talent, gain experience, and make their mark on the international stage.
